A Brief History Of Floor Globes

By | Mar 7, 2011 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

For many hundreds of year, it was thought that the Earth was a flat disc instead of a sphere. Until the introduction of mathematics that could denounce such things, this belief was insisted upon by the church. Flat pieces of parchment were a medium that the roundness of the planet did not translate well onto, and instead people began to turn to globes of the Earth. People’s curiosity and the creation of globes predated the official church announcement that the world was round. In the modern era, globes are a staple of both classrooms and offices for their educational properties. When one sees a floor globe, most people think immediately of higher education.

Floor globes are vastly different than their plain globe cousins. The difference between floor globes and regular globes is that the floor globe has a stand that is specifically designed to hold the globe up as opposed to a table or other surface. The collector name for this stand is known as the pedestal. For comparison, a regular globe’s small stand is called a ‘foot’. Because the pedestal makes up most of the floor globe’s appeal, the pedestal will be made of hard, beautiful wooods valued for their luster. The overt flashiness of these pedestals is almost unrivaled in the world of display globes, and most buyers take pride in their beautiful pedestals more than the globe itself. It’s very common for a pedestal to outstrip the globe it supports in price.

Because of their long life spans, many floor globes are quite old and retain the unique character that comes with age.  This is one reason they are often given as nautical gifts If one has their floor globe examined by an appraiser one can determine its year of make, which gives one the ability to tell the history of the item more accurately when company or co-workers ask about it. Because a floor globe is sometimes waist high, it’s easy for them to get bumped, and one should always be aware to place the floor globe in a secure location. In order to negate this small danger, fastening the floor globe to the floor or wall is a stellar idea. Inquiries are frequent when one has a floor globe in their office or house, as floor globes are brimming with triggers for conversation topics.

Monotone color palettes are not uncommon in floor globes, and these serve to bring a sense of old world charm to the floor globe, while bright colors identify it as a more modern piece. The spinning mechanism of every floor globe is different, but there are several distinct types. Because metal is naturally smooth and malleable, it is the most used material when creating posts for the globes to spin around. To save on materials, the post will be a slightly less expensive metal, such as aluminum, while the outside metal parts will be coated in a pleasing metal like brass. Floor globes of all shapes and sizes serve to bring worldly cheer to a room. Both educational and beautiful, floor globes are a top notch addition to any home.
