A Guide To Wood Pellet Production: How To Make Your Own Wood Pellets

By | Mar 15, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

The process of wood pellet production is really not all that difficult. It is more cost-effective for one and also less polluting on the environment. Wood pellet fuel is beneficial because it is more cost-effective and less polluting than the fossil fuels most of us are used to relying on. It is more convenient as well because the wood pellets used are so small and easy to get around, instead of having to fill up your gas boiler or lug firewood around.

Anyone can make their own wood pellets right at home. The process of wood pellet production is incredibly simple so anyone can follow it. Getting a wood pellet making machine is the first step, as this is the machine that is going to take the supplies you feed into it and produce the actual wood pellets you use in your boiler or stove. Although you could make this yourself as well it is really not worth it and there are few to no homemade pellet making machines in action that are actually productive.

As long as they are in decent working condition there is no problem in buying them used just be sure to check any machine out before spending any money on it. Once you have your machine ready to go you just need your supplies and you have a range of options for what you can use. You can concoct your own medley of whatever you want, anything from sawdust to grasses. There are a few rules that you must abide by if you want to produce quality wood pellets.

One of the most important tips when making your own wood pellets is to make sure the moisture content in the wood is between 10-20%. If the moisture content is not within the desirable range which is between 10-20%, the wood is going to be too dry or too wet and the pellets will not turn out. In some cases a binding agent is necessary. Most materials used to make wood pellets will have a binding compound in them already but in the event those you are using do not, you can purchase a binding compound at any local hardware store for next to nothing.

You may need to resize your supplies before putting them into the machine. Obviously the process of making wood pellets is more complex than that for cutting firewood but the benefits you get in return make it well worth it. The benefits offered by pellet wood fuel are truly amazing. Once you get the hang of the pellet making process you will have no trouble with producing mass quantities of wood pellets right at home.
