A Little About Basketball History
Basketball is a team sport played with five players on each side. The goal is to put the ball through the hoop and score more points than the opponent team. It is played in a rectangular court.
Origin of Basketball
It originated back in the late 19th century. The game was created by a Canadian-American Doctor, James Naismith. In order to keep his gym class active and fit, he came up with an idea of an indoor game which was appropriate in walled in gymnasium. His idea of the game was that it should be interesting, easy to learn and easy to play in the winter in artificial light. Basketball was an instant success. The first public game of basketball was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on 21st December, 1891.
Rules of Basketball
In North America, NBA (National Basketball Association) and NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) are responsible for the formulation of rules.
For international matches, FIBA (International basketball Association) determines the rules. All the matches held outside North America use FIBA rules framework.
In 1891 the first book for the rules of basketball was published by James Naismith. Initially the game was played with 9 players on each side with a set of thirteen rules. But the rule of the game have changed a lot since then and at present basket ball is played with 5 players on each side - 5 others sit on the bench as substitutes.
The present rules of the game are:
- The player can throw the ball in any direction by using one or both hands.
- The player can also strike the ball in any direction with one or both hands.
- A player is prohibited to run with the ball. The player should hold the ball in his hands and should not use the rest of the body for holding the ball.
- The player is prohibited from holding, shouldering, pushing, striking or tripping the opponent player in any way.
Evolution of Basketball
Basketball was played with soccer ball until 1929. The color of the ball was brown which was changed to light orange in 1930. After the huge popularity of the game, it was soon introduced in the Olympic Games in 1936. It was first played in the Berlin Olympics. Before 1949 no coaching was allowed during the game.
The NBA (National Basketball Association) was formed in 1949 with the merger of the BAA (Basketball Associate of America) and NBL (National Basketball League). 'Dunking' was banned in 1967 in college basketball games. The reason for the ban was to stop basket damage and injuries. Later in 1977 the ban was lifted by NBA.
One of the most successful basketball players is Michael Jordan. His record score of 5,987 made him a legendary player in world of basketball. Michael Jordan was one of the most successfully promoted sports persons of his generation and was helpful in endorsing the NBA around the world in the 1980s and late 1990s.
Today, basketball is one of the most popular games in the world. It is played in more than 200 countries. In the just concluded London Olympics USA one the gold medal in the basket ball event while Spain and Russia won the silver and bronze medals respectively.
