A Mini FAQ For Checking Your Car Tyres
Having been in the car industry for many years I feel it is a part of my duty to remind people what they should do if they wish to be safe on the roads. One way to make sure you are as safe as possible is to regularly check your car tyres.
The fact is not many people actually know what to look out for or what differences they can make to have a positive impact on their driving and their safety. Fortunately, I do and this little FAQ will hopefully help you understand your car tyres and will make sure you get the most out of them.
This mini FAQ was made to cover what I feel are the most important aspects when taking care of your car tyres. It will cover how your driving can impact the tyres you have, how you should check the tread of your tyres frequently and lastly it shall talk about the tyre pressure and what to look for when you do.
Ok let's start with the first common question I get asked:
In what ways does my driving have an impact on my car tyres?
You will be surprised to find out that your driving has a big impact on the way your tyres end up. I usually recommend avoiding any harsh breaking as this can rapidly reduce the grip of your wheels and will only make the car more difficult to steer. One other important tip is not to turn the wheels of the car when the car is at a standstill. You will only grind away the tread and make the tyres go bald a lot quicker than they naturally should.
Other important points are to try and miss grinding the side of your car tyres against any paving when you try and park and not to drive over any uneven road surfaces.
What is so important about tyre pressure?
Well put simply if you don't take care of the pressure of your tyres you will find that you are going to be losing quite a bit of money in the long run. If your tyres are not inflated to their specified manufacturers guidelines you will see that on average you will be wasting around 10% of all the fuel you buy.To get around this, make sure you take notice of the information regarding the inflation of your tyres in the book you got with the purchase of your car. Failing that, you can always find good resources on this type of thing online.
Do I need to pay attention to my tyre tread depth?
Yes, of course you do! Most cars and vans need to have a tread depth of around or at least 1.6 millimetres. You should regularly check the depth of your tyres by placing a small metallic ruler in the grooves of each tyre to make sure that they are optimal. If they are below the regulated measurement then it is time to get a new set of tyres.
I hope this mini FAQ helped you understand the basic concepts of car tyre safety. I always feel it is important for people to get to grips (pardon the pun) with their motors and just make sure you follow this advice whether you have expensive or cheap car tyres.
