A Perfectly Sweet Valentine Gift

In these trying times - economically speaking - the idea of purchasing roses, Champagne, (fine) chocolates, or jewelry for a loved one (for those who actually get caught up in the whole Valentine fanfare) is daunting.

With people losing jobs and homes it seems a bit difficult to go out and indulge on a girlfriend (or boyfriend) of 10 + years, let alone a honey that's less than 10 days old.

Nonetheless, and only because Valentine's Day has made its way into the culture of love, there are ways to celebrate love and lust simply, and without breaking the bank.

1. If you are inclined towards Champagne, you can save a heap of money by going with a Cava (sparking wine from Spain) or a Prosecco (a sparkling wine from Italy). Cavas and Proseccos often cost a quarter to a third of the price of Champagne.

2. Rent a screwball comedy from the 1920s or 1930s. My Man Godfrey features the lovely Carol Lombard and devilish William Powell. Or go with the classic Thin Man movies, again featuring the wily William Powell and the always-charming Myrna Loy.

3. Stay in bed. And figure it out from there.

4. Laugh and play.

5. Be thankful for love - be it in that delightful gaga youthful stage, or be it 40 years into it. Treat your partner selflessly, and never forget that particular thing that they do to you.
