The Samsung NC110 10.1 inch netbook is a portable laptop packing a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1 GB of DDR3 ram (supporting up to 2GB), a 320GB hard drive and around 10 hours of battery life. In this article we will take a look at the Samsung NC110 netbook, and whether you should buy one or not.

The Samsung NC110 comes with the standard netbook configuration but at its core is:

  • Intel Atom 1.66GHz processor
  • 1 GB ram
  • 10.1 inch screen
  • 320 GB hard drive
  • 10 hour battery life
  • 1.18 KG weight

The Intel Atom 1.66 GHz processor provides enough performance to do basic tasks such as using the internet and general office tasks. It will struggle to do games, and forget any high end 3D games, but then netbooks are not about gaming. It may also struggle to work with online video, especially high definition content, although this will vary from site to site.

The design of the Samsung NC110 is a conventional 10.1 inch netbook. It has a black plastic build with matt plastic on the inside and the glossy black plastic on the outside. Glossy black plastic is famous for attracting fingerprints, so expect lots of cleaning if you want your new netbook to look clean all the time.

Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard on the Samsung NC110 is around 92% of a full sized one. It has standard keys but they are spaced out well enough to make fast typing easy with very little practice even though the keyboard is smaller than a standard size keyboard.

The Samsung NC110 comes with Windows 7 starter edition. This offers a basic version of Windows 7, with only features such as Aero removed. Even though some of these features may be useful, and such a small and low powered machine you would be better off turning them off anyway.

  • Low price
  • Good battery life
  • Good sized hard drive

  • Glossy black led which attracts fingerprints
  • Windows 7 starter edition (may only be a problem for some people)
  • Only 10.1 inch screen, some may prefer an 11.6

Is it right for you?

The Samsung NC110 netbook offers good value, a conventional netbook layout, and good build quality. I think the Samsung NC110 is useful as a second machine especially for students working in libraries or lecture theatres, and the people who want a portable device for working in office applications. In my opinion because of the low cost of these they are much better than buying a tablet if you are interested in doing productive work.

Before you buy any netbook, laptop or electronic device that you are going to interact with the long periods of time you should always attempt to try it out in a shop. You should make sure that the keyboard is comfortable, that the screen is comfortable for you and that the laptop or netbook is the correct size for your needs. Even if you cannot find the Samsung NC110, if you try out other similar Samsung netbooks then you may be able to get a feel for what this netbook will feel like.
