Abiding by California Car Seat Law

By Edited Mar 14, 2016 0 0

Safety seat laws in California ensure that children are protected each time they are riding a passenger vehicle. The laws in California may differ from other states and so travelers should be aware of them so as to avoid violations that can result to penalties.

It is important for these laws to be enforced as according to the California Highway Patrol, about 80% of children under the age of 4 who died in these accidents could have been saved if only they were properly restrained.

Parents and guardians should never underestimate the importance of a restraint system for their children. If a child is riding with them, then, it is logical to make sure that the child is safely buckled at the rear seat.

Children under the age of 6 or weighs less than 60 pounds are required to ride in a child safety seat approved by the federal government. Also, parents must:

  • Never allow a child under the age of 12 sit in the front passenger seat as the deployment of the airbag may hit his chest and head that can lead to life-threatening injuries.

  • Keep their children above 40 pounds restrained by a lap belt if the combination of shoulder and lap belts are not installed at the rear seat of the vehicle.

  • Never carry an infant on the lap as he can be easily thrown off the vehicle if a collision occurs.

  • Keep the children seated and secured to avoid injuries that may be sustained from accidents.

Keep in mind that a lot of accidents can happen on the road and children are vulnerable to injuries. Road accidents can be caused by the recklessness of another motorist or the miscalculation of a driver. Either way, parents must always put their children's safety first and obtain child seats and boosters as required by the law.

There are many exceptions to these child car seat laws in California. Parents and concerned parties can always go online and see the best restraint that would suit the age, weight, and height of their children.
