Whether it’s for illness or a death in the family, sometimes you just need some absence excuse letter samples for school to help you figure out what you want to say.  I will provide you with multiple free examples that you can use for various reasons at the school, which can be tailored to suit your personal needs.  If the child was sick with the flu or other illness, had an appointment, or just took a day for yourself and you need to cover it, you will have some options to consider.  Here are some useable samples of absence excuse letters that you can put to use.

Absence Excuse Letter for School – Sick Child

Hello,

I am writing you to let you know my son, John Anderson, was home yesterday, sick.  He has been battling a cold for the last few days and I thought it best to let him rest and recover, so he can start feeling better.  The day of rest seemed to do the trick and his fever is gone now.

Please send any assignments home with him that he missed, so he doesn’t fall behind.

Thank you,

James Anderson

What This Accomplishes:  You have let the school know why the student was gone and stated they no longer have a fever, something that is becoming more and more important these days.  You have given sufficient detail to justify his absence, so there are no issues down the road.

Example Of Pre-Excused Vacation Request

Hello,

My son, John Anderson, will be taking a family vacation starting on March 23rd and ending on March 31st.  Since he has good grades, I am requesting a pre-excused absence be granted.

I ask you and the teachers to get any assignments to him that he needs to complete during the timeframe given.  I will make sure he gets them done before we go on vacation.

Sincerely,

James Anderson

What This Accomplishes:  In this request, you are letting the school know ahead of time that you are taking a vacation and will be gone for a set amount of time.  You are specifically asking them to work with you and send his homework home, so it can be completed prior to the vacation.  The school cannot ask for much more than this, especially if the student has good grades.

Absence Letter for Teacher – Doctor Appointment Yesterday

Hi,

My daughter, Jamie Anderson, was gone from school yesterday for an out of town doctor appointment.

Please give her any assignments she missed, so she can get them done and get caught up with her schoolwork.

Thank you,

James Anderson

What This Accomplishes:  I never felt compelled to include a doctor’s excuse or give details whenever my children had to miss school for a medical exam or appointment.  By writing this kind of letter, you have given them all the information they really need.  If you would like to include more detail, that is perfectly fine and solely up to you, the parent.

Doctor Appointment Scheduled Today Example

Hello,

I’m writing to inform you my daughter, Jamie Anderson, has a doctor’s appointment today.  I will need to pick her up by 12:30, so I ask that she is ready to go by that time.  I am uncertain at this time if she will be back to school today.

Thank you,

James Anderson

What This Accomplishes:  Again, because I don’t feel the need to disclose medical information, I would always just let the school know when I needed to pick up my child.  I did make a point to let them know if I thought they would be back before the end of the day, but that much is up to you.

Example Of Excuse Letter for School – Death in the Family

Hello,

My son, John Doe, was absent on Tuesday and Wednesday because his grandmother passed away.  We took the time to travel and be with family during this hard time.

Please be sure to send any homework he might have home with him.  In addition, I ask that you watch him carefully as he seems to be having a hard time coping with this loss.

Sincerely,

Jane Doe

What This Accomplishes:  Not only have you explained the reason the child was gone to the teachers, but you have also asked for some help from them in making sure he adjusts well.  This is especially important for younger grade school children whom haven’t been exposed to death.  It is a hard time for young people and requires some attention.  If you don’t want to specify who died, you can really just say they missed the day for a death in the family.

Unspecified Family Emergency Absence Excuse Letter

Hello,

My son, Jon Doe, was gone from school on Wednesday for a family emergency that had to be attended to.   I ask that you please keep an eye on Jon and make sure he is adjusting properly.  He is going though a difficult time right now.

I will help to make sure he gets his homework done and caught up. Please send anything he needs to complete home with him.

Sincerely,

Jane Doe

What This Accomplishes:  You don’t always have to give the reasons your child missed a day or two.  Sometimes, the reasons are quite personal and don’t need to be shared.  If you don’t feel like sharing, or it’s very painful even to write about, just make it unspecified.  In addition, the writer has once again asked for help in making sure their child is doing okay.  As a parent, you can fully expect the teachers and faculty to at least keep an eye on the child and let you know if they see any issues.

Pre-Excused Absence Request For Funerals

Hello,

My son, John Smith, is going to be out of town for his grandfather’s funeral this Thursday and Friday.  John was close with his grandfather and is having some trouble with this.  I am asking you to please inform me if he seems too sad to be at school.  If so, I will come and pick him up.

Thank you,

James Smith

What This Accomplishes:  You have asked for help and explained the reasons your child might be having a hard day.  You are letting them know ahead of time, so there shouldn’t be any issues.

These absence excuse letter samples for school and teachers can come in handy.
