Chocolate pearls

There are two types of chocolate pearls, the black Tahitian and the freshwater white pearls. The Black Tahitian is lightened into a brown tone while freshwater white pearls are tinted with a chocolate hue. Unlike naturally colored pearls, chocolate pearls have a strong, shiny copper/ bronze color. To achieve the desired color, most pearl farmers use a dying process with silver nitrate. Freshwater pearls

Most of the freshwater pearls production/ industry is located in China which produces tons of freshwater pearls every year . Pearl cultivators create a tiny incision on the mantle tissue of the freshwater mollusk. After this process, they return the mollusks to their freshwater milieu where they are kept for a couple of years. Due to the absence of a bead nucleus that directs its development, the pearls usually do not have a perfectly round shape. You get freshwater pearl necklaces rings, bracelets and earrings.

South Sea Pearls

These pearls are one of the biggest commercially produced and harvested cultured pearls globally. As the name suggests, these pearls come from the South Seas which stretchesfrom the northern part of the Australian coast to the southern part of the China coast. They are cultured in Indonesia, the Philippines, the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Such big bodies of water are the native habitat of Pinctada maxima or the large oyster. It can grow up to 12 inches.  These large oysters are commonly nucleated and it produces a much larger bead or pearl compared to other saltwater oysters such as the Akoya.

South Sea pearls can grow into large sizes which makes the other pearls near it look much smaller in comparison. These pearls are unique, having a smooth lustrous appearance and sleek to the touch characteristic. They also come in different colors such as gold, silver and its usual color, white. Tahitian Pearls

It is a common misconception that Tahitian pearls are only produced and harvested from Tahiti. Tahiti is indeed the holder of the bulk of the industry, but it does not mean that only they harvest these pearls. Other Tahitian pearl farms can be found such areas as French Polynesia and Micronesia. 

These pearls which are mostly black exude such elegance which makes them really attractive. Besides the pearls themselves, the inner shell is also admired for its beauty and, during the early 20th century, the creature was almost hunted to extinction for its shell alone.
