Accordion Shutters
There are two basic types of accordion shutters. Accordion shutters can be installed either inside or outside a home. In the case of inside use, the term accordion is referring to the way they open and close. Indoor accordion shutters have panels that fold open together, so that they stack up as they expose the window. They are named such as they are opening and closing actions resemble the manner in which an accordion moves while being played.
The term accordion shutter is more commonly used to describe a type of external storm shutter that is common in locations such as Florida where hurricanes are a common danger. Unlike indoor accordion shutters, external accordion shutters can be used to cover almost any type of opening. In addition to being used on the outside of windows, they are also used to cover sliding doors, enclose patios, and protect storefronts. As such, external accordion shutters are prized for their strength and ability to defend against storm elements, such as high winds, heavy rains, and flying debris. They are often affixed permanently to one's house and are generally quite easy to for the owner to operate, whether from outside or inside. They can also come with a lock, which requires a key to open, keeping the areas they enclose not just safe from external weather damage but also from damage caused by people, such as theft. This is an especially important feature for stores that install accordion shutters. It is especially handy due to the fact that looting can often occur after a sever storm.
Accordion window shutters are not meant to be decorative and certainly not known for their beauty or elegance, but the buyer does have a little bit of freedom in choosing the appearance of the shutters. That freedom primarily comes from the choice of colors, which, to be fair, is not a huge or enticing selection. The colors accordion shutters are often found in are white, an off white, a bit darker tan color, and a dark brown. While this is not a great selection, having that little bit of freedom of choice can still be nice, and it is important to keep in mind that the appearance of the shutters is the least important part. If you are in the market for accordion shutters, there are plenty of places you can find them, especially if you live in a coastal area. Checking out the yellow pages or looking online are two good ways to start searching. Just make sure you get your accordion shutters installed before the next big storm!
