Accredited Medical Assistant Training

The medical community is growing by leaps and bounds every year. It is one of the only fields that thrives even in a sluggish economy. Becoming a Medical Assistant can give someone a great edge in a wonderful field. But first, the student needs to be sure that the program they are going to pursue has everything they need in order to succeed. Programs can be pursued online and in classrooms. The certified medical assistant field is a solid, stable field. There are steps that should be followed before choosing the program that is right for any student. Doing the research to follow these steps is crucial in correctly obtaining any accreditation, and being able to work legally in ones state of residency.

The first steps in pursuing a certification as a medical assistant are to make sure the programs one is researching are accredited. For a medical assistant certification program the student should look towards ABHES (the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) or CAAHEP (the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs). These are the places programs must be accredited in this field. There is no other certification that will suffice besides one of these two. Before pursuing any program, check with either the ABHES or the CAAHEP to avoid wasted tuition money, time, and effort.

The duties of a certified medical assistant are usually taking vital signs of the patient, checking them into a room, doing basic testing on patients like urinalysis, echocardiograms, and basic blood work. The certified medical assistant is the first line of communication between the doctor and the patient, and plays an important role in the patient's treatment. It is a very important job, and not one that someone should not enter into lightly, especially if they have a weak stomach. Medical assisting can lead to other avenues such as nursing, or medical school. It has great potential in a variety of ways.

Once the medical assistant training program has been completed, the student will be eligible to take the stae board certification program. In order to take the test, the student will have to pay a nonrefundable fee of $125 as a recent graduate. All other potential test takers are required to pay $250. Once the fee is paid, and the test taken, and passed, the student is certified. This certification is good for 60 months, or 5 years. After that point, the certification will need to be updated.

Becoming a certified medical assistant can be a very rewarding career. Online programs as well as in person programs are very easy to find. One just needs to follow the proper steps to assure that their program contains the necessary requirements for certification. Once the program is complete, and the certification test passed, the new medical assistant can pursue a life long career just about anywhere they choose. The medical field is ever growing and lends itself to be a versatile field. Starting a career as a medical assistant can be a great plan.
