Accredited Online Bachelor Degrees as a Career Path

Do you know what is in store for you if you pursue an online bachelor degree? Perhaps you have considered pursuing such a degree in a traditional curriculum, but you found that you did not have the time to squeeze it into your busy schedule. Further, you may think that an online degree is not as rigorous as a traditional on-the- ground degree. I can assure you that online degrees are, on the whole, just as rigorous as traditional degrees. The coursework is the same. The difference is in how the courses are taught--the delivery system.

The traditional course is taught in a context of space/time, while the online course is taught in cyberspace, in an asynchronous environment. Space is collapsed. Instead of meeting in Gibson Hall at 10:30 MWF, one can, in an online context, physically travel from state to state and country to country and still meet with your ongoing course whenever you wish to meet it. The course is contained in the laptop you carry with you.

Accredited Online Bachelor Degrees Platforms

When you first sign on to your online course, you will see several color coded panels on your monitor. Each panel represents some feature of the course such as Announcements, Grading Policy, Discussion Thread or Assignment Standards. But first, one encounters the Announcements.

In the announcements are messages of an emergency nature, sometimes from a dean. Also, in Announcements are statements of the instructor's office hours, their policy on late work, on plagiarism, on grading, etc. Often a dean may send a message giving information about the upcoming registration and how one should proceed.

As we move down the left panel, we next encounter the weekly assignments. The lectures are there and the assignments, including a rubric which indicates the tasks to be performed and the criterion by which the behavior will be judged. The Panel at the bottom is labeled Problems and Solutions and here a student is encouraged to share with the class new discoveries they have made. This may include new insights into navigation from one link to another. In the very middle of the screen one will find the discussion forum. Here students respond to a prompt supplied by the instructor and the instructor, to increase interaction, moves the question around to the entire group by piggybacking on the answers given and sharing his or her experience of the issue. This is in a way, the heart of the course as far as instruction goes. The student can click on Ask the Professor and leave a message that will be responded to in 24 hrs, and the student and the professor can enter a dialogue in which the class will gain the benefit. The heart of the course in respect to methodology is mastery of the platform and navigation of the platform.

Grading in Classes on Accredited Online Bachelor Degree

The grading system in online courses is useful to the student and the instructor alike. The grades are averaged and posted for every week and also cumulatively for the semester average. The rubric grades are averaged with the grades scored on the objective tests. The student may check his/her grade at any time as well as checks by the instructor. The transparency of the grades supports both the instructor and the student in preparing for a student teacher conference. The information is private as it should be. Also, sometimes a student will want to have a private meeting with the instructor and they can use the grading system as a basis of discussion. In extreme cases, where there is a strong conflict between the instructor's evaluation and the student's, a dean may be called in-- or sometimes, legal representation on both sides. This is a rare occurrence, but it is sometimes necessary , so it is a good idea to have a policy in place to cover these situations.

Mastery of the Platform and Navigation in Accredited Online Bachelor Degrees.

The mastery of the platform and the skill of navigation on that platform require a learning curve that takes one into the very heart of the online experience. One must know how to move from one link to another. Otherwise, the student's confusion over navigation may interfere with performance in the course. In a sense, online instruction encompasses both the content and the process of learning any particular subject.

If a student wants to share experiences with a fellow student, the Student Lounge is the place for that. This is a non-graded area. The students can relax and share virtual coffee. Many times the sharing leads to bonding and the students find a partner to go through the program for the completion to their study. It can therefore be beneficial to both students. It is important in this case not to interfere with the naturally developing process.

So you may now see that an online course differs from a traditional course in respect to delivery and not content. The student is free to take standard courses online such as algebra, composition, history, languages, business such as accounting, marketing, and advertising, banking, insurance, etc. The content does not change, but the delivery method does. This shows that the commonality of online courses is the same whether one is exploring accredited online bachelor degrees, online schools, online business management degrees or, minimally, online schools.

In some respect, more attention is given the student in an online class than in an on the ground class. For example, it is easy for a student to hide in a traditional class. They can sit in the back of the room and not participate. But in an online context, they must participate. If they do not participate there is an electronic record of their non performance, and in group work it is the same situation. If they do not participate in their group project, they will register a low score. The instructor will see the performance or lack of it and set up a remedial course for the student. So, who can say that the online course is inferior in content or process to the more traditional curricula? And which one is more convenient for the student? Whether one is considering a specific such as an acredited online bachelor degree or a general one such as online schools, the process is the same.

It is becoming more realistic to be an adjunct college professor with online degree programs that offer new and returning college and university students the chance to earn accredited online bachelor degrees. Distance education technology has matured over the last decade to the point that online college courses in accredited online master's degree programs are an established element on the academic landscape. Each of the online classes in an accredited online college degree program requires a qualified online adjunct instructor to teach the online course. This means that as more online degree programs with online schools appear the more online faculty positions will be available to individuals with earned graduate degrees that want to teach college and university students for a living.
