An acid reflux disease diet combines low-acid, low-fat foods with beneficial lifestyle changes for those who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (also known as acid reflux or gerd). This is a condition that damages the esophagus over time, leading to pain, discomfort, and the long-term possibility of esophageal cancer. Common symptoms may include a burning sensation in the throat, heartburn, chest pain, stomach discomfort and vomiting. The good news is that you can help to minimize your discomfort and prevent further damage with an acid reflux disease diet.

One of the primary and most immediate changes you can make to your eating habits is to avoid high fat foods. This includes anything that is fried or deep-fried, as well as most fast foods and fattier meats. This is due to the excess stomach acid that is required to break down fattier foods. People suffering from acid reflux tend to have weak stomach values which allow excess acid to enter the esophagus - so this kind of diet is designed to benefit its follower by introducing foods that are easier on the stomach overall. Additionally, it's recommended to avoid beverages such as most alcoholic drinks, including wine, beer and hard liquor.

Whole grains, natural dairy products, lean cuts of meat (skinless chicken breasts and lean ground beef), non-spicy vegetables, and low-citrus fruits are ideal to keep your stomach calm and help regulate your digestion. Anything that aggravates digestion should be limited or avoided all together, depending upon the severity of your acid reflux and discomfort.

Another suggestion that will aid your success is to avoid tobacco and chewing gum. Smoking weakens your esophagus walls, and the act of chewing gum causes your stomach to begin producing acids that it won't be using to break down foods (unless you chew gum immediately prior to a meal).

It's important to note that you should always be following an acid reflux disease diet under the supervision of your doctor. If you have been suffering from acid reflux for an extended period of time, your doctor may suggestion additional means - including prescription medications - that will help aid and treat your condition. Even if the discomfort you experience is only a minor annoyance, it's always smart to take the initiative to improve your health and lower your risk of further complications, and a few simple and easy changes to your diet can be an excellent way to start!
