Choosing The Right Strings

Acoustic Guitar String Reviews

My goal with this list of acoustic guitar string reviews is to help you pick the right type of replacement strings for your playing style.

At any music store, you're bound to notice that there are a ton of options available, and a ton of price points to go with them. With so much choice, the best way to find the best strings that suit your playing style is to read a few acoustic guitar string reviews.

As a guitar player for 12 years, I've had experience with many different types of guitar strings. I've had great experiences, great disappointments, and lots of wasted money. Learn from my mistakes, and buy the right strings for you.

Elixer Acoustic Guitar Strings

The Best Acoustic Guitar Strings

elixer acoustic guitar strings

Ok, for my first acoustic guitar string review, I'm going to start with (in my opinion) the best strings available: Elixer. Elixer acoustic guitar strings are exceptional in almost every aspect, and that is reflected in their high price.

Durability: all Elixer acoustic guitar strings are extremely long lasting. They take at least twice as long as a regular string set to wear out or snap. This is especially important if you're touring or performing, as a busted string is tough to deal with mid-show.

Sound: These strings sound amazing, and they'll continue to sound amazing for a long time. They are extremely bright and resonant. They typically make a guitar sound higher quality than it actually is. Not only are they bright, but the sound quality will last for much longer than a lower priced string set.

Price: OK, Elixer acoustic guitar strings are expensive. But I think they are well worth it. Re-stringing a guitar is a tedious task, who wants to do it twice as often?

Martin Guitar Strings

Acoustic Guitar String Reviews

Martin acoustic guitar strings

Martin acoustic guitar strings come in a variety of prices, but the ones I see most often are quite inexpensive. These strings are actually an incredible bargain, especially if you're on a lower budget. They don't last as long as Elixer guitar strings do, but they are a good option.

Durability: Martin acoustic guitar string durability is average. Considering they are less than half the price of Elixers, they are pretty strong. I play pretty often, but for the casual strummer, these strings should last you a couple of months.

Sound: Martin strings, like Elixers, sound wonderful and bright. However, this sound does not last. The sound will get muddy and less bright after a little while. Enjoy the month or two of excellent sound, and then replace them.

Price: Like I said before, Martin guitar strings for acoustic are inexpensive! You can find a set for well under $10, and considering how long they last, it's a real bargain. So if you don't mind restringing your acoustic guitar every couple of months, this might be your best option.

D'Addario Guitar Strings

Acoustic Guitar Strings & Reviews

D'Addario Acoustic guitar strings

In my search for the best acoustic guitar strings, I bought a set of D'Addario strings. Sadly, these didn't really please me, but they have some benefits for the right type of player.

Durability: This was my major complaint with D'Addario strings: they are not durable. I snapped them after only a couple of days worth of playing. There is a reason for this: I tend to play very hard, and D'Addario is better suited for a picking style.

Their lack of durability doesn't mean that they are no good. In my acoustic guitar string review, I found that they just didn't fit my style of strumming. They sound amazing.

Sound: D'Addario has a lovely, warm, light sound to it. They are better suited to a quieter, gentler style of playing. They can sound quite wonderful under the right set of fingers.

Price: D'Addario strings are not much pricier than Martins. I do recommend them for the finger picking guitarist, but not for the heavy strummer like myself.
