Add Sophistication to the Dining Room with Glass Shelving

By | Jun 25, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Glass shelving is a wonderful way to add an air of sophistication to your dining room while also adding space to display the treasures you have collected over the years. Glass has the ability to make a space look exclusively rich and well appointed. If your dining room walls are looking a little drab, glass shelving and glass shelving units will dramatically upgrade the look of the entire room.

Choose Shelving that Matches your Style

You can find glass shelving that perfectly suites the style of your dining room. Contemporary decors can be complemented with contemporary glass wall shelving that seems to float in the space, or sleek cabinets with simple lines fitted with glass doors and stylish interior lighting. A traditional curio cabinet works perfectly in a traditional dining room. Country and shabby chic aficionados may prefer a glass fronted hutch to show off antique dishes and collectibles. Whether your dining room sports modern black metal wall sculptures or traditional large wall art painting, you can find shelves and shelving units that will coordinate beautifully.

Tips for Displaying your Treasures

Just as the cabinet helps define the style of your dining room, the items you choose to display will be another visual link to your style. With sleek contemporary shelving and cabinets, glass or metal decorative accessories and stemware with contemporary shapes and bold colors will make a cohesive statement, as well coordinating decanters or serving pieces and decorative accents. In traditional or country style, collectible pottery, vintage glassware and stemware and antique china can be displayed with decorative collectibles. In either case, effective displays can be built by coordinating colors and motifs with the overall style of the room.

With display cabinets, your display can be even more effective when the inside back of the cabinet is done in a color that contrasts with the contents; this makes the contents stand out even more. If your cabinet doesn't have enough contrast as is, you can add contrast by painting the inside back wall of the cabinet or by covering it with fabric, self adhesive paper or wall paper. With open wall shelves, you can apply the same principle by painting the wall that houses the shelves in deeper shade that accents the color palette of the room.

How to Keep your Shelves Sparkling Clean

No matter how beautiful a display you create, it won't look impressive in the least if the display pieces and the shelves are coated in dust. How often you need to dust will depend on the amount traffic through the room, and open shelves will need dusting more often than shelves protected by cabinet doors. To dust, use a microfiber cloth and remove the items from the shelves, dusting each one as you go and set them on a towel or table cloth on the dining room table. When the shelves are empty use the cloth on the shelves and wipe down the shelving with newspaper; this will polish the surface without the need of chemical window cleaner. You could also opt to use white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and then wipe with newspaper; take care not to overspray any solution on the woodwork of your shelves or cabinet.
