There are decorative screens or glass doors to dress up the opening and protect your home from sparks, tools and holders to make tending the fire easier, wood racks to keep your wood tidy and many other options.

If you are only using your fireplace to burn wood, you might be interested to learn about the many ways you can have more fun by adding fireplace accessories.

Fireplace safety is always a good place to start when selecting fireplace accessories. A screen can be basic or ornate, and will keep sparks or embers from falling onto the hearth or floor. Glass doors also provide a modem of safety, but in addition make your fireplace more efficient by preventing the chimney draft from removing indoor heat. A fireproof rug in front of the hearth is also a good idea.

If you are looking for ways to make the fire starting process more tidy and organized, metal wood holders or totes are really indispensable. A decorative match holder nearby is really convenient and extra long matches are a plus. There is also starter wood available called fatwood, which is much easier than breaking up a bunch of kindling. Fatwood is so efficient that just a couple pieces will have your fire roaring in no time. There are special vacuums that make ash removal much simpler without creating ash clouds.

Ideas to make your fireplace more aesthetic include wrought iron candelabras that you set inside the firebox during the summer, or ornate andirons which also add class. Or you can try fire glass, which is an amazing glass that actually burns giving off heat and an amazing glowing display that will mesmerize your family and friends.

It also makes sense to utilize your fire for cooking. This idea goes beyond popping popcorn you can add a swivel to hold a cast iron Dutch oven and heat dinner while relaxing in front of the fire.

If you are tired of handling firewood altogether, you can always convert your wood burning fireplace to a gas version. Gas logs look quite real and still provide all of the pleasure of a fire without the mess.
