What are Adult Education Classes?

Adult Education classes are courses geared towards working adults who are college aged and beyond. These classes can be for educational, business, or personal enrichment. Class time is usually scheduled in the evenings or on weekends to accommodate the busy schedules of adult students who may jobs or families to juggle. These are usually non-credit classes, which means that they cannot be applied towards the completion of degree. Sometimes certificate programs are available.

Are Adult Education Classes Right For Me?

If you are serious about furthering your education, either by improving your reading skills, earning your GED or learning a new skill or trade then adult education classes are probably right for you. Adult education classes are offered in the traditional class room setting and online. The most important part about choosing a program to enroll in is making sure that you have an adequate amount of time to devote to attending classes and completing course work. Traditional adult classes are typically scheduled to meet one to three days a week for 1 to 2 hours per meeting. Rarely are adult education class schedules very demanding and rarely will a class meet everyday or for longer than 2 hours. This is to allow time for adult students to tend to their hectic lives outside of class. Online classes are usually more flexible. Most online courses won't require students to "attend" class at a scheduled time but course work must be submitted by the deadline.

 

 

What Kind of Adult Education Classes Are Available?

The kinds of adult education classes available to you will vary based on where you live. You can brush up your old skills or learn new ones. Big cities and heavily populated areas are more likely to have a larger variety of adult education classes available. Cities like Palo Alto, CA and Boston, Ma to name a few great adult education programs available. Most cities have GED classes and adult literacy classes available for free at the local public library. You should contact your city's main library branch to find out what classes are available. Large cities like Palo Alto, CA have adult vocational training classes available like,  as well as adult enrichment classes like cooking and photography.  Alternatively main community colleges have adult eduction classes that cover a wide variety of subjects available several times a year. Special classes for seniors or the 55 and older crowd are also available in some areas.

 

What are the Benefits of Attending Adult Education Classes?

Enrolling in adult education courses is a great way for adults to continue their education. Attending a class that you choose on your own because you are interested in makes you more likely to enjoy the class and more eager to learn. Besides learning something new completing the course will give you a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. You will also get to meet new people that you might not have other wise come in contact with.

 

Where Do I Find Adult Education Classes?

  • Library - Your local library probably offers adult education classes several times a week. Typically these classes are free.
  • Community College - Most community colleges have "continuing education courses" which are non-credit classes available for person 18 and older. 
  • Adult Education Centers - Larger cities often have adult education centers that offer a variety of courses for adults.
