Advantage v Advantage Multi for Dogs

Advantage v Advantage Multi. Which topical flea treatment would you use for your dog?

Firstly we need to know what both Advantage and Advantage Multi for Dogs actually do. Then of course there is the small matter of price, add to that prescription requirements and you are getting closer to choosing the topical flea product for your pets. Finally and most importantly, ask yourself does your actually dog need all the medication provided by these products?

Advantage v Advantage Multi Health Benefits

Both these products are produced by Bayer, a well known supplier of pet medicines. Both are currently only available in their branded form from Bayer - no generic versions yet exist.

Firstly Advantage flea control. This is a really mild topical flea treatment. It destroys fleas in their adult and larval stage on contact. It is used as any other topical flea treatment, by placing the liquid drops onto the spine of your dog as directed on the pack. Within a few hours most of the fleas on your dog are destroyed. Most importantly the active ingredients stay in your dog's system for 30 days so your pet remains flea free for this long.

Now Advantage Multi for Dogs. This contains the same flea killer as ordinary Advantage. So used every 30 days it prevents fleas. But, in addition the drops also contain a heartworm preventative. This works to destroy any larval heartworm parasites that have been picked up by your pet during the 30 days prior to use. In addition the medicine also destroys roundworms, hookworms and whipworms. This means Advantage Multi is three pet medicines in one. But, do not forget you will still need to treat most dogs for tapeworm every three months or so as this product does not combat that particular intestinal parasite.

Advantage v Advantage Multi Prices

First of all shop around. Your vet is never the best place to buy either product if you want great low prices! Advantage flea drops are around 60% the price of Advantage Multi. But, if you use heartworm medicines and a triple dewormer for your dog you are likely to find the cost of both these plus your usual Advantage flea medicine work out more expensive than simply switching to Advantage Multi.

Advantage v Advantage Multi Prescriptions

Advantage flea meds are an over the counter medicine but Advantage Multi requires a prescription in the US.

Advantage v Advantage Multi - Which One Would You Choose?

Well, if you already use, and are happy with Advantage Flea Drops great. But if you need to use a monthly heartworm preventative too I would be inclined to switch to Advantage Multi as a time-saver. However if you are a frugal shopper that is using a generic heartworm tablet you probably will not make any financial savings by switching to Advantage Multi for Dogs. If your dog is not in an area with heartworm disease then why waste the money on all that extra medication?
