Advantages and Disadvantages to Outsourcing Your IT Needs

By Edited Mar 8, 2016 0 1

Choosing to outsource your IT needs can save your company money. IT outsourcing has become an increasingly popular strategy by which companies save money and thus gain a competitive edge in the ever-more demanding world of communications and service industries. There are, however, downsides as well as advantages to IT outsourcing. Here are some points to consider when deciding whether to use IT outsourcing or not.

The most obvious advantage of IT outsourcing is the savings. You'll spend a lot less money when you pay a foreign IT company to take care of your IT service needs. Hiring a full-time IT employee requires you to pay a certain wage, which is usually much higher than the standard wages paid in foreign countries, and it also means that you'll have to provide that employee with benefits like health care, dental care and a retirement plan. All of these you can stop worrying about if you choose to outsource your IT jobs.

Once that's taken care of, you'll have free office space that you would have otherwise had to use to house your IT department. This allows you to create a more comfortable and spacious work environment, resulting in higher efficiency and productivity.

The Disadvantages

The biggest negative about outsourcing is that it contributes to the growing unemployment problem currently happening in the U.S. by reducing the number of job opportunities available to IT professionals here. Yes, outsourcing provides, essentially, cheaper labor and less corporate responsibility for the working conditions and wages of the people handling your IT services, but there is the ethical issue of detracting from the success of the local economy. There are plenty of computer repair services in San Diego , but ultimately the choice is one that has to be made by the company management in charge of such decisions.

In more concrete terms, though, outsourcing your IT needs means handing over control of the management of your company's IT services. If you have a corporate philosophy or image that informs the way you treat clients and conduct your customer services, outsourcing could mean not being able to guarantee the consistency of these standards. Because time-zones might be drastically different in the country that hosts the IT company to whom you're outsourcing, there might also be delays in response time and getting in contact with them could prove difficult.

There is definitely a tense relationship between our economy and outsourcing. It is a very interesting topic of discussion.
