Advice on Home Lighting
In this article, I will give you some advice about home lighting. With some many options and different types of lamps, it can sometimes get confusing about what you should have and where. Hopefully these tips can make the process just a little bit easier for you.
The Different Types of Lamps
Lamps are an important part of your home décor. In fact, they are just as important as the carpet, wall color or furniture. There are a large range of lamps that you can buy. Below you will find the most popular.
1. Accent lamps: these lamps can be used almost anwhere including the bedroom, entrance, hallway and bathroom. They are designed to provide light in small, dark areas. Most are under 20 inches in size and therefore perfect for these types of areas.
2. Table lamps: a table lamp isn't always used for a table. It should be a shelf or dresser. Regardless, they are lamps used for general purposes and can go in any room.
3. Desk lamps: as the name suggests, a desk lamp is used on desks for work purposes. They tend to direct light downwards on to the desk and usually 12 to 20 inches high. The light tends to brighter and more direct than other types of lamps.
4. Floor lamps: are used on the floor to illuminate dark corners, areas or shadows that other types of lighting can't reach. These are handy when you wont' only a small lamp when space on tables or shelfs are limited.
5. Wall lamps: these types of lamps are used when you don't have much space on a table, shelf or other place to sit them. You will often see these types of lamps in bedrooms.
Advice on Lamp Shades
1. As a general rule, the height of the lamp shade should be the same length as the lamp base to the bulb socket. Some lamps will break this rule for the sake of something different or a modern look. This is fine provided they suit the look you are trying to achieve.
2. The width of the shade should be - at a minimum - the same size as the widest part of the lamp's body. Most lamps are actually wider than the lamp itself. The shades that give the most room are drum lamp shades.
3. The shade must cover the light switch. However, this is obviously not the case with oil lamp shades.
4. You should ensure that the shade gives the bulb enough room to operate. Bulbs to get hot and if the shade is too close to the bulb it can become a fire hazard
