For those who live in large urban areas the availability of subways, buses, and other forms of public transportation makes it much easier to live with less dependence upon cars. However, if we consider our transportation needs in light of our daily routine, we might all be able to opt for other means of travel more often, and in more situations.

For instance, if you live within 20 miles of your work place or school, there are numerous modes of transportation that could get you there without driving your car. Certainly a bicycle is an option, but that takes a bit of time, and you might arrived exhausted and in need of a shower. Another option would be a motorized bicycle or an electric moped. Both would give you the range of operation needed, and enough added speed to reduce the commute time. In addition, even if you pedal, you would not arrive tired for your work day. Of course if the range of the round trip exceeds the bikes capacity, you would need to recharge at work or school.

If you go to a store within 10 miles or so of your home to pick up groceries or other small personal care items, these vehicles would also get the job done. If you plan on picking up more than a bag of groceries however, you'll need to include a basket, some panniers, or something similar on your two wheeled vehicle.

If you're more athletically inclined, but use the bus or subway for part of your commute, then a folding bicycle is a good option to consider. Within seconds you can break down the bike, fold it compactly, and carry it onto the bus or train, haul it into your office or cubicle, and go about your business. They are also great when you travel by car. They stow away in the trunk but when you are ready to do some local sightseeing, you've got your wheels ready to go.

For singles who live close to school or work, even an electric scooter can be considered. They are smaller than most other options and more affordable as well. Backpacks are perfect for toting the necessities along, whether it's books or a laptop.

All of these options greatly reduce the noise, pollution, and expense related to getting from one place to another. Certainly they aren't appropriate for long distance travel. In addition, anyone traveling on a moped, scooter, or bicycle of any type, needs to consider and make special arrangements in view of the weather. However, for millions of people, the day to day transportation needs they have can be met by these two wheeled vehicles.
