Affordable Auto Insurance

By Edited Oct 27, 2013 1 1

If you're in the market for affordable auto insurance, then you should know about some of the things you can do to keep your rates low. It seems that every time you turn on the television there's a new commercial from all of these companies, all claiming to have the best price. Obviously, they cannot all have the lowest rates. So how can the average person actually get affordable auto insurance from a company that they can trust? Here's how to get those cheap rates to insure your car.
Increase your deductible to get affordable auto insurance. The companies will look at the likelihood of having to pay out a claim when they set rates to insure your car. By increasing the deductible, you will decrease the likelihood of the company having to pay a claim for you, thus decreasing your rates to insure the car. To get affordable auto insurance this way you will assume a certain amount of risk. For example, if you select a $1000 deductible for your vehicle coverage, you may have a small accident with $900 worth of damage. Under this scenario, you would not be able to make a claim, and would need to front the bill to get the vehicle repaired. Still, many people choose this option to get affordable auto insurance. Best of all, you won't have to change companies if you don't want to.
Keep a clean driving record for affordable auto insurance. As you know, tickets and accidents will increase your rates. By following speed and other traffic laws, you'll not only save on this, but you'll save money on the cost of fines. It only makes sense. Drive carefully, and defensively. Unfortunately, some people already have a poor driving record, making it more difficult to get affordable auto insurance. If you fall into this category, there are some other things you can do to keep your rates low.
Ask for any and all discounts to get affordable auto insurance. If you use the same company for your home, car, and health needs, you may very well get a fairly decent discount. Other discounts aren't so obvious, but should be explored. Will the company give a discount if you keep the vehicle in a garage? What if you install an anti theft type device? You will likely need to ask about discounts. Take the initiative to call your agent and find out what you can do for discounts to get affordable auto insurance for your car or truck.
Choose new vehicles wisely for affordable auto insurance. A car will generally be cheaper than a four wheel drive truck. In addition, vehicles with lots of safety features and good crash ratings will often allow for better rates. Call your agent before you purchase a new car or truck to find out if you can insure the vehicle fairly cheap.
Avoid making a claim for affordable auto insurance. Rates to insure the car increase, so it may not be cost effective to make a small claim. Just consider the long term impact on claims before you file them. Generally speaking, a claim of a few hundred dollars may not make any sense for you. If your rates go up over the next couple of years, you'll more than pay out the balance the company paid you. Use good common sense.
