All About Environmentally Friendly Apparel
"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." - Native American Proverb
What Exactly Is Eco-Friendly Clothing?
Environmentally friendly clothing is apparel that leaves as minimal impact on the environment as possible. There are several ways in which this is accomplished, including through the use of organic cloth, renewable fibers, and recycled fibers as well as merely reusing old clothing. Since some of the above terminology can be a bit confusing, let me give a brief explanation:Organic Clothing
Organic clothing simply refers to clothing that is made up of fibers that have been grown without the use of toxic pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful chemicals. Organic clothing can be made up of any type of fibers, but the most common material used is organic cotton.Renewable Fibers
Renewable fibers come from plants which require fewer resources to grow than cotton and have a fairly rapid development rate which leads to more environmentally friendly clothing. Such fibers include bamboo, hemp, and cornsilk.Recycled Fibers
Recycled fibers are man-made, usually acrylic or polyester, and are manufactured out of recycled plastic. One day you may end up wearing that Coke bottle you're drinking out of!Where To Buy Eco-Friendly Clothing?
Environmentally friendly apparel can be purchased in many stores, as it has become quite popular as of late. Just check for clothing that is advertised as one of the terms I have used above. Just be wary, however, as not all clothing that is billed as organic is %100 organic. To ensure that your garment contains %100 organic material I advise purchasing it from a specialty shop online. The same goes for bamboo, hemp, and recycled products. If you do decided to go the recycled route, I recommend buying an environmentally friendly Earth Ragz poncho.Vintage Clothing Is Environmentally Friendly Clothing!
An alternative option to buying new clothing is shopping vintage! Reusing previously worn clothes is a great way to keep a perfectly good shirt from ending up in a landfill somewhere. Purchasing clothing from a thrift shop or vintage clothing store is perhaps the most eco-friendly option available to you!Still, if you'd rather wear a new garment please go for one of the above options. Organic, renewable, and recycled apparel does a lot to preserving the Earth for generations to come!
