All Natural Sunscreen

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

All natural sunscreens came out as a healthier alternative to traditional sunscreen. It is said to have fewer chemicals present in regular sunscreen while being just as effective. The debate between this sunscreen and regular sunscreen persists.

Not so long ago, there was a time where a tan is the surest way to health. Lessons from school tell us that the sun helps the body to produce Vitamin D, which in turn combats rickets. Moderate exposure to the sun’s rays is the most effective way to have Vitamin D, thus the rise in sun bathing and sun tanning. Today, with the ozone layer being holed by gases from factories and cars, sun tanning is almost impractical given the risks of additional exposure to ultraviolet, abbreviated as UV, rays.

Look into the ingredient list

Sunscreens are invented to help us in our sun bathing sessions. These products block the UV rays from entering through the skin and cause enough harmful radiation to cause skin cancer. Most consumers look for the SPF – or Sun Protection Factor – and the brand name when looking for a suitable sunscreen.  That’s not bad since these people are determined to get the best sunscreen available. What they don’t look for in a regular basis, however, is the ingredient list. It is important to glance at the small fonts of the ingredient list so that you have an idea of what chemicals you are going to apply on your skin. Traditional sunscreens contain chemicals that are usually pronounced in chemical laboratories like avobenzone and oxybenzone; all natural sunscreen has ingredients that sound like a health shop, examples are macadamia nut oil and beeswax.

Avoid parabens at all cost

In all natural sunscreen you are assured of a healthy sun bathing experience with the least amount of chemicals as possible. Many commercial sunscreens contain parabens, which are preservatives commonly found in cosmetics and medicines. If you have a difficult time recognizing these parabens, a good hint of the presence of these are chemicals having the names butyl, propyl, methyl and ethyl. These chemicals are thought to cause breast cancer, though research is still ongoing to prove that theory; traces of parabens are found in breast cancer tumors. Parabens have estrogenic properties, which can clash with androgens in the female body; also, estrogen is known to promote the growth of tumors in both animals and humans.

Inside all natural sunscreen

Two important components in sunscreens – particularly in all natural sunscreen – are titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. This compound is present in many skin enhancement products, such as tattoo pigments and many kinds of sunscreen. It absorbs UV rays, has a good refraction capability, and does not change its color when exposed to light – properties which make titanium dioxide viable as an ingredient in sunscreens. Its toxicity is low compared to other chemicals, a reason why sunscreen for infants has a titanium dioxide – and zinc oxide – base.

Zinc oxide is a safe inorganic compound in both regular sunscreens and all natural sunscreens that is a proven cure for a lot of skin ailments; an example of which is baby rashes caused by diapers. This compound is valued by dermatologists for its antibacterial capabilities and its ability to alleviate the skin from the harmful effects of irritants. The FDA approves sunscreens with zinc oxide for newborn infants. In sunscreen, zinc oxide functions similarly to titanium oxide; zinc oxide blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

Both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide sunscreens commonly leave out a white residue on the skin. To remedy this concern, sunscreen companies reduce the size of these compounds’ particles to nano size, enough for these microscopic units to pass through the skin, and into the tissues and bloodstream. With this action comes concern from regular sunscreen users. Today, research is still being made on the physical and physiological effects of nano particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide found in all natural sunscreen.

Buying all natural sunscreen is not as easy as it sounds. It does not matter if you purchase the sunscreen at online retailers – Amazon and eBay are good places to start with – or at local health shops; the important thing in choosing all natural sunscreen is the ingredient list. Make sure that the natural sunscreen you bought contains more plant essential oils, titanium oxide and zinc oxide – with minimal chemicals, if there is any. Remember, it’s not the brand name that counts; rather it’s the benefits that come with every bottle of sunscreen.

The next time you hit the beach; make sure that you are armed with the right sunscreen – all natural sunscreen to be exact. With this sunscreen, rest assured that you will spend your time on the beach enjoying the sand and water, not on your faulty sunscreen.
