Allen West was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He comes from a long line of Military officers. So it was no surprise, when still in high school, West joined the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program. Immediately after high school, he went to college. He is a driven man, and was inspired by his parents who said he could achieve anything if he set his mind to it.
With this years presidential election candidates pretty well decided on, it’s never too soon to look to the future and speculate “up and coming” possibilities. Meet Alan West, Florida Congressman of the 22nd district, former Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. army, and family man! Will he actually be the next African American president? Well, we don’t know, but knowing who’s in the political arena at any time is good for any upstanding citizen!
Military Background and Education
With such a strong military heritage, it isn’t a surprise that Allen would enter the military himself. After earning his bachelor of art degree, West entered the Army giving his country 22 years of service. He later went on to get his Master’s degree in political science and has a Master of Military Arts and Sciences from an army college. Allen West has served in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Afghanistan. His honors include: the Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service Medals, and the Valorous Unit Award.
Controversy - Every Candidate has those!
There was one incident in which some of his military practices were in question involving the detaining of a civilian Iraqi police officer. He later admitted to breaking rules, but also stated he would go to long lengths to protect his soldiers. He is quoted by saying, “If it’s about the lives of my soldiers at stake, I’d go through hell with a gasoline can.”
Political Career - Allen West Congress
Alan West is a strong conservative republican. He is a supporter of the controversial Tea Party Movement and also a member of the congressional Tea Party Caucus. He is known to reach out to small communities as well as larger ones through “town hall” like meetings.
Allen lost his first congressional race for District 22 in 2008. However, he defeated his opponent, Ron Klein in 2010. His campaign raised the 2nd largest amount of money of any Congressional candidate in the U.S. Most of these donations came from private individuals.

The Possible Future
So are his eyes on the White House? Well, he certainly has not said for sure, but with is success in raising money and straight forwardness that some like, perhaps he will have a chance in the 2016 election year. We shall see!
