Alpha Brain Waves
Did you know that your brain waves determine how you feel, think, and act on a daily basis? If you understand how your brain works, then you can take steps to change how you feel consistently. One common rhythm of waves (which are essentially electrical impulses that travel throughout your neurons) are alpha brain waves. This range of waves cycles at around eight to twelve hertz per second. If you have ever felt relaxed, then you know exactly what it feels like to experience the alpha range. A major reason that people need vacations from their work is because they get so stressed out and caught up in the high beta brain waves range that they do not take time to increase their alpha.
There is increasing evidence that it may be very beneficial for your brain and overall health to shift out of the high stress beta to the low stress alpha brain wave rhythm. People with a lot of anxiety, nervousness, or who feel rigid on the inside usually have too much beta for their own good. Now in some cases, it can be very healthy to have beta activity present. In fact, it is even practical to have beta waves for most of your day. With that said, not being able to shift to the slower ranges like alpha can be very problematic because this can cause stress related illnesses to take over.
If you want to experience your alpha brain waves, then take the time to close your eyes and some deep breaths for about 10 minutes. Slowly inhale a large breath of air and then exhale slowly as well. If you know how to do meditation or mental relaxation exercises, then you are one step ahead of the game when it comes to improving your alpha. How will you know if you access the alpha waves? You will know once you feel both calm of mind and body. People that have adrenaline rushing through their systems are most definitely not in alpha.
People that feel relaxed and calm often spend most of their time in the alpha brainwaves state of mind. Like any brainwave pattern, there are benefits of having it and some unwanted effects. Since alpha waves do not have many unwanted effects, it is regarded as one of the most ideal states to be in. However, if you are going to solve 100 math problems, you probably would want to ramp up your brainwave activity to the beta waves by having some caffeine or an energy drink ahead of time.
