There is and has been for the last several years a push towards creating a greener world. Ironic right, since we always have referred to Earth as the blue planet. One thing is for sure, we need to address the ways that we live on this planet if we hope to keep it - blue, green or otherwise. This is of particular concern with home products that we use everyday. In this case, we will we talking about the bedroom not the typical green household products issues you’ve likely heard before.
While using more ‘green’ cleaning products is definitely important, what this article is addressing is the issue of the types of fabrics used for our bedding and other household fabrics and materials. In this specific case, how about futon covers and their various fabric choices. It would be great to be able to say that there were as many green and sustainable choices as there are with traditional fabrics and materials. The fact of the matter is that we are a long way from that in all areas of living products, not just bedding and mattress goods.
There is a strong movement of people, consumers more notably, that demand their products be offered and produced in ways that are more sustainable for our environment and our communities. This is evident in the way that organic foods have become so much more mainstream. Organically grown produce was relatively unheard of at your local large chain grocer until about 5-10 years ago. Now, these large chains even have their own brand of organic foods. This is all because the dollars were going towards these products.
We really do speak with our wallets and purses here. This is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it can move people, communities and economies towards practices that support our world. It seems that this article on futon covers is quickly becoming a rant on the social and economic policies of the world, so let’s re-focus here. How the humble futon cover gets to play a role in this debate is that there are slipcovers that are made of hemp, silk, and organic cottons. There are some bamboo fiber fabrics and clothing items showing up now too, so it shouldn’t be long until some well-healed entrepreneur sees the value in producing a bamboo fabric futon cover. It really would be a perfect match with the Asian inspired futon and all. However, this is not my role. I’ll stick to writing about changing the world, one futon mattress cover at a time.
