Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main international airport in The Netherlands, located in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, around 9 miles southwest of the Dutch capital Amsterdam.
The airport code for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is AMS. The airport is located below sea level and has five runways. Based on the number of passengers, Schiphol Airport is the fourteenth airport in the world. The Dutch airlines KLM, ArkeFly, Transavia.com and Amsterdam Airlines consider Schiphol their home airport.
Information, Shopping and Museum
Should you require any information: there are Schiphol information desks located in Schiphol Plaza, near Arrivals 2 and 3. After the passport control you will also find information desks in Lounge 2 and 3.
Schiphol Plaza is the shopping center of Airport Schiphol. You will find here a wide variety of shops, including media and electronics, fashion, perfumes and cosmetics, books and magazines, chocolate, delicatessen, flowers and plants. Food and drinks can be obtained from various bars, restaurants or fast food chains. The shops are open seven days a week from 7 AM until 10 PM.
In the terminal of Schiphol Airport you will find a small branch of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, which can be visited by passengers. Schiphol is the first airport in the world with a museum in the terminal.
For religious people, there is a prayer room in the main hall of the terminal.
You have several transport options for getting to and from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol:
The airport is 9 miles southwest of Amsterdam and is on the main A4 highway from Amsterdam to The Hague and Rotterdam. The journey time from and to central Amsterdam is about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your destination in Amsterdam. Directions to the terminal or to Amsterdam are clearly signposted.
Schiphol Airport has a train station in the terminal, below Schiphol Plaza. There is a direct train service between Amsterdam Central Station and Schiphol, with a train running every 5 to 10 minutes. Depending on the service, it will take you 15 to 20 minutes to travel to Amsterdam Central Station, which is located in the center of the city. You pay for a one way fare approximately 4 euro. At the Schiphol train station you will find as well direct train services to other Dutch cities including Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Online rail service information is available on the website of the Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen).
Outside the terminal, in front of Schiphol Plaza, you will find regular bus services between the airport, Amsterdam Center and other cities in The Netherlands. It will take around 25 minutes to travel by bus to the center of Amsterdam.
Taxis are available outside Schiphol Plaza. You can book taxis in advance via Schiphol airport's official website. If you ordered a taxi for your onward journey following your arrival at Schiphol, you should go to the Schiphol Transfer Assistance (STA) desk. The staff there will bring you in touch with your taxi driver. Most taxi companies participate in this service. The desk of the Schiphol Transfer Assistance is located at Schiphol Plaza and is open 24 hours a day. Please be aware that you cannot book any taxi rides at the STA desk!
