An A-Z of Olympic Events 2012

The modern Olympic games was first held in Athens in 1896 and has followed every four years with a break for 1940 and 1944 owing to the Second World War. The events held have changed dramatically with ony 15 events being held in every games.

This list provides details of the events taking place in  London 2012. - I will be there as I have some tickets for the boxing!


Archery

This will be held between Friday 27th July and Friday 3rd August 2012 on the hallowed turf of Lords Cricket Ground in Central London.  There are competitions for four medals on an individual and team event, for both women and men but no mixed teams.

Athletics

The Athletics programme is scheduled to take place between Friday 3rd August to Sunday 12th August 2012 (weather permitting).

There are a vast range of events with an even larger amount of medals to be won on both the track and the field. The majority of the events will take part in the new stadium at the Olympic park, built especially for the Olympics. The marathon will take place in central London and will include running up the Mall past Buckingham Palace. London is used to staging marathons and it will provide a good opportunity for spectators to see and cheer on the athletes.


Badminton

 Badminton takes place at the Wembley Arena between Saturday 28th July and Sunday 12th August 2012. There are five medal events for individual and doubles, mens and women's and a mixed doubles medal.

Basketball

Basketball will be taking place at the 2012 Olympics between Saturday 28th July and Sunday 5th August 2012. The early matches and the women's  quarter finals taking place in a reserved area of the Olympic Park. Later matches move to Greenwich Park where the quarter, semi and final matches are played.

Beach Volleyball

Saturday 28th July to Thursday 9th August 2012

The one thing that London does not have is a coastline or beaches playing beach volleyball on the muddy banks of the River Thames would not be an option. The olympic organising committee have found a novel way around this by building a beach in the world famous Horse Guards Parade in London. Horse Guards Parade the scene of the Annual  "Trooping of the Colours" where the Queen inspects her army will be filled with imported sand creating a surface suitable for playing on. The event will be one of fast action team work and has two medal categories one for female teams and one for male teams

Boxing

Saturday 28th July to Sunday 12th August 2012

The Boxing tournaments take place at the Excel centre ( formerly the millennium Dome) and feature fights at all weights for men from Light Fly weight to Super Heavy Weight. For the first time women's boxing is featured with fights in  Fly, Light and Middle Weight! I have some tickets for the boxing I am not sure how I will react if it is women boxing!

Canoe Slalom

Sunday 29th July to Saturday 11th August 2012

The canoe slalom takes place  30 km outside of London in Hertfordshire at the Lee Valley White Water Centre. There are two course which have been built for the Olympic tournament. and events are Men's single and double canoe and single Kayak whilst women can enter Single Kayak.

Cycling

Saturday 28th July to Sunday 12 th August 2012

The cycling events take place in the velodrome in London otherwise known as "The Pringle" owing to its futuristic design which closely resembles a popular snack.

There are a number of events for both men and women, including Individual and Team Sprints and Omnium and Keirin medals.

Diving

Sunday 29th July to Saturday 11th August 2012

The diving takes place in the Aquatic Centre which has been built in the Olympic park. and will survive as a permanent asset to the local community when the Olympics is over.

Events are evenly split between men and women and include Springboard and Platform with synchronised, ( two divers) events on the Platform and Springboard

Equestrianism

Saturday 28th July to Thursday 9th August 2012

The equestrian events take place at Greenwich park in the Royal Borough of Greenwich ( granted Royal status in the Queen's jubilee year). This is an historic setting with views across the lawns to the River Thames. Greenwich is the oldest  Royal Park and is home to the Meridian or Greenwich Mean Time. There are medals for dressage, eventing and Jumping for both individual and team performance.

Men and women compete against each other in the Individual events and teams are mixed.

Fencing

Saturday 28th July Sunday 5th August 2012

The fencing events take place at the Excel stadium and there are ten gold medals available. There are Mens and Women's medals for Individual Foil, Epee and Sabre and Single sex team events for the Foil and Sabre.

Olympic Football

Wednesday 25th July to Saturday 11th August 2012

The venues for the football games are spread across the country from Hampden Park in Glasgow to Wembley Stadium in London. Other venues are Coventry, millennium Stadium at Cardiff, Old Trafford ( the home of Manchester United) and  St James Park in Newcastle

There are competitions for both male and female teams with the male teams fielding a majority of players aged under 23 years .

Gymnastics

Saturday 28th July to Sunday 12th August 2012

The artistic and trampoline gymnastics will be held at the North Greenwich area ( the ex millennium Dome), with other events taking place at the Wembley Arena. There are many categories of Medals in  the three distinct genres, artistic gymnastics, trampoline and rhythmic Gymnastics, with mainly individual but some team events.

Handball

Saturday 28th July to Sunday 12th August 2012

Handball will be played at the Olympic Park on the Basketball court area. This is a team event and there are teams of men and women. There are no mixed teams.

Judo at the 2012 Olympics

Saturday 28th August to Friday 3rd August 2012

Judo is being held at the Excel in London. There are medals in mens and women's events broken down into weight categories. :

  • Men's categories - 60kg, 66kg,73kg,81kg, 90kg, -100kg, +100kg
  • Women's categories - 48kg, 52kg,57kg, 63 kg, 70kg, -78kg, +78kg

Modern Pentathalon

Saturday 11th August  to Sunday 12th August 2012

The Modern Pentathlon comprises the following events, fencing in the Copper Box, then swimming a 200m race in freestyle in the Aquatic Centre swimming pool then a show jumping course at Greenwich  with a 3km run which also includes some shooting this echoes all the original skills of riding, running, fighting and shooting!  There is a separate competition for men and women.

Rowing

Saturday 28th July to Saturday 4th August 2012

The rowing event takes place at Eton Dorney in Buckinghamshire, just outside of London. It is set in a 400 acre country park ( that's big for such a small island) and is renowned as a centre of excellence for rowing. There are fourteen rowing events for both men and women in single events such as the sculls, to Pairs, Doubles, Fours and Eights. Plenty of rowing combinations.

Sunday 29th July to Saturday 11th August 2012

The one thing we do have in the United Kingdom is sea; handy being an island when you are hosting sailing events. The sailing for the Olympic Games is taking place at  the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on the South Coast of England. The village will become low cost housing after the games are over.

There are a number of events for both men and women including Finn, Laser, 470, Star , 49er and RS-X.- Women have the 471, Elliott 6m, RS-X. Laser Radial.

Shooting

Saturday 28th July to Sunday 5th August 2012

The shooting competition will be held at the Royal Artillery Barracks at Woolwich in London. There are both indoor and outdoor ranges with spectator seating away from the gunfire. There are a number of medals for both women and men using Air Rifles, Pistols and Trap Shooting over various distances and positions.

Swimming

Saturday 28th July to Saturday 4th August 2012

The pool events will take place in the Aquatic centre which was built for the Olympics whilst the Marathon event will take place on the River Thames at Hyde Park- Hopefully it wont rain on the competitors or at least not as hard as we have had rain in the last few weeks. There are events for men and women using  Freestyle, Butterfly and Breaststroke over distances of  between 50m and 1500 metres. There are also team events which are done on a relay with the next person going only once the previous competitor has reached the end of the pool.

Table Tennis

Saturday 28th July to Wednesday 8th August 2012

Table tennis matches take place in the Excel stadium. There are competitions for Men and Women's Individual and Men's and Women's Teams. China has dominated this fast moving sport so it should be interesting to see what happens this games. I personally dont expect too much to change!

Taekwondo

Wednesday 8th August to Saturday 11th August 2012

The Taekwondo competitions take place at the Excel Stadium.  Competitions are split between Men and Women and differing weights. The Mens weights are split at 58 kg,68 kg,-80kg and +80kg. The Women's weights are lighter being split at 49kg, 57kg, -67kg and +67kg.

Tennis

Saturday 28th July to Sunday 5th August 2012

Players at this years Olympic tournament could have that feeling of " I have been here before" as the Olympic Games tennis tournament takes place at Wimbledon. There are tournaments for Men's and Women's Singles and Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Perhaps it is another chance for Andy Murray to win at Wimbledon? Who knows, but the Nation is behind him

Triathlon

Saturday 4th August to Tuesday 7th August 2012

The triathlon is an endurance event which involves a 1,500 swim, a 43km bike ride and a 10km run! The event takes place in Hyde Park, near Buckingham Palace and all components are  entered on the same day, so no chance of nipping home for a rest! There are two events one for men and one for women, with the Women's event taking place on Saturday 4th August whilst the Men's event takes place on Tuesday 7th August.

Volleyball

 Saturday 28th July to Sunday 12th August 2012

The Volleyball tournaments will take place at London's Earls Court an exhibition and concert arena. Volleyball is a team event and there are medals for both men's and women's teams.

Water Polo

Saturday 28th July to Sunday 12th August 2012

The water polo takes place in a temporary arena in the Olympic park. The building may be temporary but it can still provide seating for 5,000 spectators. The building has been designed so that it can easily be dismantled and re cycled, from the roof downwards even the spectators seats have been hired, so that they can be returned after use.

Weightlifting

Saturday 28th July to Tuesday 7th August 2012

The weightlifting takes place at the Excel in London and is divided into different weight categories. Men's weights are  52kg, 62kg, 69kg,77kg,85kg,94kg, -105kg and +105kg. Women lift lighter weights and their weight categories are 48kg,53kg,58kg, 63kg, 69kg,75kg, +75kg

Wrestling

Sunday 5th August to Sunday 12th August 2012

Wrestling also takes place at the Excel stadium. There are two styles  Greco-Roman using the upper arms and Freestyle where any part of the body can be used (except obviously the teeth!) Most of the events are for men but there are four events for women but in freestyle only.

I visited your wonderful city last year, and was just amazed! My choir sang at the St Paul's Cathedral and we were awestruck at the beauty of that place.
