An Affordable Solution To Prevent Freezer Burns And To Preserve Foods

By | Mar 25, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0
Freezer burns are caused when food items stay in the freezer for prolonged periods of time and are damaged by it. This is the reason that many people throw away food items since it no longer tastes appetizing. For years there have been commercials advertising machines that allow for the items to be vacuumed sealed but these are expensive to buy and to run. A new solution to this problem is the vacuum-sealed bags that are manufactured by Zip-Lock. One must purchase their vacuum in order to use these bags but it only costs about $10 and the batteries can be changed.

The initial kit with the vacuum comes with a few bags but new bags are also relatively cheap and cost about the same as high-end zip closure freezer bags. The system does work when used properly and food is preserved for longer periods of time than if using regular freezer bags. All the air and moisture is removed from the bag and this prevents the foods from gaining that freezer burn taste. These bags are available in most grocery stores along with the other zip closure bags. The starter kit can also be purchased at the same location. There are two varieties of the starter kit and one has a battery-operated vacuum and he other is a hand pump vacuum. The hand pump vacuum is cheaper, about $6, but takes more effort in order to completely remove all the air and moisture from the bag.

The battery vacuum is bit more expensive, about $10, but it is more convenient to use than the hand pump. If these vacuum sealed bags are used properly they will prevent freezer burns for long periods of time and also will preserve foods longer in the fridge. The instructions are fairly simple to follow and one must be careful to not overfill the bags since it will prevent proper sealing. This is the only major concern when using these bags but they come in a variety of sizes, or in vacuum sealer rolls, in order to remedy the problem. Any kind of food can be stored and preserved in these bags and it will stay fresh for longer. One great item to place in the bags is cut fruit because they will not develop the brownish tint that occurs when they are exposed to air for long periods of time. This will preserve fruit for a significantly longer time than regular storage bags. Meats are also great candidates to be stored since it will be preserved in the freezer for very long periods of time if the bag is sealed properly. The seal in the bags does last for a long time and does not allow air to enter therefore preserving foods.
