The engraving machine has been known to be used to personalize a large array of items. This is usually done by a small hand held machine but can still be a very tedious task. This is generally done on types of materials such as metal, plastic, wood, glass, and different types of stones. To personalize an item may consist of name, address, and/or phone number; it also may just be a persons signature. Many engravings are also known to be done as art as a design or picture. Many do this as a job or as a hobby. Using an engraving machine comes in very handy for quick personalizing of gifts especially weddings and anniversaries. The most common use is on metals like gold, silver, copper, platinum, brass, stainless steel even aluminum and iron. These are gifts that can also be added to and cherished for many years to come.

There are more professional engraving machines used for larger corporate items as well as smaller desk desk top models. These both have many uses from dog tags to luggage tags. They can also be used for name plates, trophy plates and name badges. Large industrial engravers are called CNC engraving machines (CNC stands for computerized numerical control). They typically are fed from a computer modeling program or other such digital data input and are operated completely hands free. These machines are suitable for large items and for items that require the utmost precision.

A jewelery engraving machine like all others engraves on small gifts. It specializes on watches, bracelets, necklaces and pendants. This machine can also engrave on the inside of a ring. There is a machine that specializes in only the inside of rings that is called inside- ring-engraver.

Another type of engraving machine is the laser engraving machine. There are actually more uses rather than engraving such as marking on items as well as cutting them. The different materials able to be used in the machine include plastic, metals, acrylic, wood, leather, glass, and even rubber.

We see now that there are many different types of engraving machines. There is a large range of uses for these machines both recreational as well as necessity.
