The human spine is composed of 24 articulating vertebral bones. There are also 9 fused vertebral bones located in the sacrum and coccyx. The anatomy of the spine is located at the posterior aspect of the torso. The spinal column is normally categorized into three regions.
- Cervical region – there are 7 vertebrae in this region which are named as C1-C7. It is the closest bones to the skull and connects the head to the body. The first three cervical vertebrae allow movement of the neck. Damage to the cervical region could result to difficulty of swallowing and paralysis.
- Thoracic region – there are 12 vertebrae in this region which are named as T1-T12. The thoracic region is at the level of the lungs and part of the gastrointestinal tract. It is also in the thoracic region that the rib cage is attached which protects delicate internal organs. Damage to this region could result to difficulty of breathing.
