Ancient egyptian names

By Edited Mar 16, 2016 1 2

Egyptian names and meaning. Egyptian male names and Egyptian female names.

Ancient Egyptian names have a great meaning and the choice of the name could be connected to the status of the individual, his or her personality, job or the Gods which are worshiped or believed to have a connection with the individual.

The correct meanings must be first selected and consequently combined in order to form the name.

Both simple and complicated names were constructed. The simple names were usually a combination of a noun and an adjective, such as Neferet which means beautiful woman. Towards a more complicated name is one of the famous Tutankhamun, which means the living imagine of Amun. Names can also be inherited in a way by reusing them inside a family.

As in other cultures Egyptians also associated the names with the parents. As we have “son of” in English, they had Ir-en for the connection with the father indicating that they are a part of the body of their father and Mes-en for the mother who gave birth to the child.

Although complicated ancient Egyptian names came into existence it is not to say that everybody pronounced the entire name in the conversation. Not at all. As we use nicknames, so did the Egyptians who abbreviated in the same manner as we would do today depending on the closeness of the relationship.

Interestingly, knowing the name of someone was considered a very important thing, because it was believed that if you know the name of a person this would give you the power over this person. This name of course is not the same ancient Egyptian name which is used in the conversations, but rather a special name which is given to the person upon birth, which is not to be disclosed freely. As a sort of a Voodoo act Egyptian-style, knowing this special name of someone would give you the ability to harm them.

Below authentic ancient Egyptian names reproduced with the permission of Kememou website listen in the sources below.

Nefer
Thanks. Wish all names had a transcription for pronunciation...What is the right way to pronounce Nebi? The "e" is it pronounced as in "nebula"?...and is it an "i" (as in "i am") on the end?
