Rationale for This Article
We all have mentors that we choose to be in our lives. Sometimes those mentors do not even know who we are. I have quite a few of them. One mentor, Anthony Robbins, has shaped my desire to become a psychologist, speaker, writer, and better man. His attitude about life and his zest to make people’s life better is just one of the great attributes Tony has. I am writing this article over Tony Robbins, with the hope his story inspires you to Awaken the Giant Within (his great book) and apply those techniques to your life, Today. Tony exemplifies the Level 10 Life and you can to.
Anthony (Tony) Robbins was born on February 29, 1960. Yes he was a leap year baby and has made leaps and bounds from a boy, whose father had sporadic involvement in his life and a mother who would carry him from house to house in her unstable relationships with different men. His single mother was sort of a drifter and Tony did not have a stable figure in his life. Moreover, his mother did not have a stable job and Tony tells of a story that was embarrassing to him as a child when his mother had to accept charity from a local organization on Thanksgiving. The unstable childhood played a part in Tony’s desire to have a stable adult life.
The unstable lifestyle did teach Tony some of life’s hard lessons, but his early adult life played even more of an impact of shaping the leader Tony is today. As a young man, Tony sought out more stable mentors to align himself with. Tony found the founder of Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), John Grinder. He demanded Mr. Grinder teach him these techniques to overcome pain and anxiety. Tony may have been trying to kill the demons that were haunting him from having a father that did not care and a mother who was more worried about her gentleman companions that about her son who was struggle with emotional issues.
After learning the NLP techniques, Tony started a quest to read at least one hundred self help books in a year. He stated on his CD set, Personal Power that he read about 800 over the course of the next three years. During this three year period Tony worked promoting seminars for one of the most well-known motivational speakers of that time, Jim Rohn. According to Robbins, “My first mentor was a man named Jim Rohn. He taught me that happiness and success in life are not the result of what we have, but rather of how we live. What we do with the things we have makes the biggest difference in the quality of life.”
During this same time Tony was honing his own seminar techniques and absorbing as much of the business aspects as he could. The national media started to call him “Wonder Boy.” Part of this accolade was the he could absorb a lot of information and then be able to explain this in a way to make people understand or to catch their attention. Tony started to do a fire walking demonstration in order to prove a point that the mind can be convinced of things if the body will just do it. This also works in reverse. The title of “Wonder Boy” could also be applied to what happened to Tony Robbins a few years after being in the business. Tony stated he started to get caught up in the limelight and forgot to pay attention to the things that really matter in business, the people and the money. He started neglecting the needs of the people that work for him and at the same time, the person he had entrusted with his money was milking him for hundreds of thousands and/or millions of dollars. Tony lost him mansion, all the cars and the glamour that went along with being the Wonder Boy. He moved into a small one room apartment and fell into some depression.
While sitting in his one room apartment Tony had the thought that he made it once by relying on the experts and pulling himself up by his own bootstraps. If he did it once he could do it again. He went for a run by the beach and realized he was only 21 years old and he had a long life ahead of himself. He started reading self-help books on a daily basis and by the end of the year had read over 100 books. He is still an avid reader. Tony started to trust people again, but trusted himself most and decided to learn from his mistakes. Those self-help books got him back on track and he took the information he learned and applied to what he already knew to develop his new program of personal power. As a matter of fact one of his most widely sold programs goes by that title or Personal Power. This program was the agenda for his comeback in the world of motivational leadership and for his own company.
Building his Business and Personal Brand
Tony Robbins has built his business from the ground up and has become one of the top named motivational speakers in the world because he works hard everyday. He is known, not only in his own field but millions of people have seen him on television with his infomercials or on popular movies, such as Shallow Hal, where he plays himself uses some of the techniques he teaches in his seminars. The show was a comedy, but Tony Robbins played himself while promoting himself and his ideas to the audience.
Tony is the ever-marketing motivational speaker. He believes that everyday we are marketing ourselves to those around us. People tend to remember less, the good things we do and tend to remember more those things we don’t do just right. Tony Robbins puts himself out there for the betterment of himself but he recognizes he can do more with his fame.
Tony Robbins was selected as Vice Chairman of Health, Education, and Science for the United Nations Research Center for the International Council for Caring Community. Robbins participated in the discussions that help try and improve the relationship between the Venezuelan government and the leaders of the world. He has been involved in negotiations that have broken the patterns of violence and de-escalated the world leaders that invite it. Leaders and achievers already at the highest of success in their respective fields call on Robbins to be their advisor when they face difficult decisions requiring creative options.
Robbins has met with, consulted, or advised international leaders including Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher, Francois Mitterrand, Princess Diana, and Mother Teresa. He has consulted members of two royal families, members of the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marines and three U.S. Presidents. Robbins has had the opportunity to identify patterns and model the underlying strategies generating consistent results for some of the most successful individuals in the world. Millionaires call Tony Robbins to ask him how they can improve themselves to make more money.
Anthony Robbins was selected by Accenture as one of the “Top 50 Business Intellectuals in the World. He was also chosen as one of the top six business leaders in the world to coach their entrepreneurial clients by American Express. Robbins was also the first individual in the personal improvement industry to surpass more than a billion dollars in gross sales.
Tony’s ex wife, Becky, appeared on many of his training tapes, seminars, and infomercial but at his peak of success, Tony and Becky announced they were getting a divorce. Tony had dedicated a book to Becky and stated she was one of him motivations for success. Fans and others were disappointed in this announcement because many of Tony’s messages had included the success of a happy life with regards to relationships and now the guru or gurus could not keep his own marriage from coming asunder. Some people never forgave Tony, but other realized he was only human as well and if Tony could come back from devastation in his life as high up on success as he was, they too could come back from a blow to success. Robbins used the lessons from his own divorce, to put into his seminars and books to make him more popular than ever and now with his new wife is as active as he ever was.
If you’re lacking motivation, Tony Robbins is your man. However, motivation by itself will not make you successful. Sometimes, focusing too much on motivation can work against you. Some people are so addicted to tapes, books, and seminars, but they never actually focus on the nuts and bolts of putting together a successful business system. Motivation by itself is a waste of your time.
Assuming, you’ve got a sound business model, a guy like Anthony Robbins can definitely benefit your productivity. For more than twenty five years, Anthony Robbins has served as an advisor to leaders around the world. A recognized authority on the psychology of leadership, negotiations, organizational turnaround, and peak performance, he has been honored for his strategic intellect and humanitarian endeavors
Tony Robbins has become the world’s foremost active new personal motivator. He’s made a name for himself that will go down in history beside the well known names like Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill, and Norman Vincent Peale.
But Robbins isn’t perfect. No one is. So take what he says with a grain of salt. You cannot listen to just one person and hope you can know everything there is to know about business. Actually, Tony Robbins doesn’t teach that. He read a wide variety of people to get to where he is today and he proposes this as well.
I like Tony Robbins, but don’t just focus on motivation. You’d be better off to spend more of your time focusing your efforts on marketing tactics, studying business models that work, and getting marketing courses by the biggest names in the industry. You need the nuts and bolts of creating an income to become wealthy. Motivation is only one of the many key principles to success.
The essence of Tony's system - NAC - is that you are able to reprogram your mind to achieve the success you desire. Suppose you wanted to give up smoking, for example. What you would do is: deliberately create a mental association between the remembered pains of some past unpleasant experience with the stimulus of the cigarette. The basic idea is replace the positive associations of cigarettes - in the minds of smokers - with negative ones. And as we know, Freud told us that human beings are motivated (programmed) to want to move away from pain and toward pleasure. Tony is indeed a strong advocate of this technique.
Like so many writers and presenters in this field, Tony has a humble background and has managed to effectively apply the principles of success to his own life. I understand he is now a multi-millionaire and his seminars are often sell-out engagements played to large gatherings at venues all over the world. However, Tony has a social conscience. The Anthony Robbins Foundation is an organization that provides help for the people with social needs, such as the homeless and the elderly as well as working with young people all over the world.
The contribution of Tony Robbins to the field of Personal Development, I believe really lies in his unique ability to communicate the benefits of self-improvement to a mass audience, in a thoroughly entertaining manner. He has certainly been responsible for positively impacting the lives of very many people; and for that, he deserves to be properly acknowledged.
Now in his fifties, he sleeps only a few hours a day has relentless energy and never accepts anything less than the best. Even after his seminars, which often finish at the early hours of the morning, he still goes to work to find out what he could have done better. Of course there are still those who criticize him and what he teaches and even those who think he is a fraud. But you cannot deny that Anthony Robbins has had an extraordinary life and like him or love him, extremely successful.
