Having a vibrant, fresh and youthful complexion does not only enhance one’s beauty. It also signifies good health. But, one of today's dilemmas about our protective layer is premature aging.

We sometimes ask ourselves, why do some people look younger even though we belong in the same age bracket? This is a typical scenario nowadays. This is not only because of the varying skin care regime and products we use. Remember, there are several factors such as our environment and lifestyle habits that affect our aging process.

With that said, using anti-aging creams and treatments is not your last resort. There are several natural anti-aging remedies you can use to counter the effects of premature aging. 

1. Coconut Oil

A tropical fruit known for its long list of health benefits is coconut. This natural product is also included in my list of natural anti-aging remedies. Why?

Aside from being an excellent moisturizer, it also provides anti-aging benefits. This is due to its vitamin E and other antioxidant contents. As you know, antioxidants deter premature aging by protecting our body from free radicals. But, this is not the only age defying effect of coconut.

Coconut also contains various fatty acids both saturated and unsaturated that can penetrate the skin. Through this, it can exfoliate dead skin cells in a gentler manner. Lastly, coconut has also shown significant result in improving collagen formation and cell rejuvenation.

Using coconut oil as an anti-aging remedy can be done in several ways. You can either take it orally or apply it on your skin every night. Basically, coconut oil is a common ingredient in face mask recipes along with other natural skin care products. However, be reminded that you should only opt for products that are pure, organic and unrefined or those labeled as “virgin” or “extra-virgin”.

2. Avocado

If you are fond of guacamole, you probably know the many health benefits of avocado. Today, this fruit is typically used in various natural anti-aging remedies. Why?

Aside from the fact that it has antioxidant components, avocado also has the D-mannoheptulose. Basically, this sugar component has shown significant results in improving one’s collagen formation. To explain further, as a person gets older, collagen production decreases. This inevitably results to wrinkles and a less elastic skin. Hence, collagen plays a vital part in creating a youthful skin.

In another research conducted by a professor named Christian Cortes-Rojo, they found out that avocado oil can protect cells (yeast) from free radicals. Although more research on its effects on human cells is still necessary, the World’s Healthiest Foods Foundation notes its “impressive” results on animals.

To get the anti-aging benefits of avocado, you can either eat it or apply its pulp directly to your skin. Some experts also recommend applying a purée in your face and leave it overnight. You can make this purée or anti-aging facial mask by mixing olive oil (2 tablespoons), lemon juice (1/2 teaspoon) and avocado (1 tablespoon). 

3. Tomato and Olive Oil

Another promising anti-aging remedy is tomato. It is a widely known fact that this fruit contains significant amounts of potent antioxidants such as lycopene, vitamin E and C. These substances counter the effects of free radicals. It can also deter premature aging through lycopene’s capability to protect our skin from the sun’s damaging rays, which causes photodamage and wrinkles.

In a research conducted by the University of Manchester, they found out that combining tomato and olive oil work best in protecting the body from photodamage. Take note, olive oil is another effective anti-aging remedy you can use. This is primarily because of its oleocanthal and polyphenol components that retard the aging process.

With that being said, you can get the benefits of tomato by including it in your diet. However, lycopene is readily absorbed by the body if it is cooked. Furthermore, keep in mind that this is not a substitute for sunscreens or sun blocks. Hence, it is still imperative to apply sun protection lotions before going outdoors. 

4. Papaya

For a quite some time now, papaya has garnered a spot as one of the best ingredient in skin care products. There are various reasons for this.

Basically, this tropical fruit is loaded with potent antioxidants like vitamin C, A and E.  But, there’s more. It is also considered an excellent exfoliating agent. This is due to its components namely papain and alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). Both papain and AHA works like a chemical peel, but in gentler fashion. Basically, it breaks down the proteins of dead cells that have accumulated in the outer layer of our skin.

Eating papya is one way to reap its health benefits. Another way to use this tropical fruits as a natural anti-aging remedy is to make a papaya purée and use it as a face mask. You can also add milk in your mixture. The fat contents of milk are known to slow down the effects of alpha-hydroxy acid. Through this, you can avoid skin dryness.

Keep in mind that AHA is an acidic substance. Papaya has high amounts of AHA especially its peel. In concentrated mixtures, it can cause dryness and a burning sensation. For this specific reason, it is best to only leave the papaya mixture on your skin for a short period, preferably 15 to 30 minutes. Furthermore, using AHA makes your skin vulnerable to the sun’s rays. Hence, it is strongly recommended to apply sunscreens when going outdoors. 

5. Milk and Honey

Typically labeled as the “elixir of life,” milk and honey is a popular combination in various skin care regimens. It is without doubt that both natural products have proven themselves in the beauty department. But, what makes milk and honey an excellent anti-aging remedy?

Aside from being a highly nutritious mixture, both products have high amounts of antioxidants. Milk and honey also contain mild alpha-hydroxy acids (lactic acid and gluconic acid) that enables it to remove dead skin cells, brighten our skin and lighten age spots. Lastly, clinical studies have also linked both acids in cell rejuvenation. Hence, this mixture encourages production of new cells for our protective layer.

Like other natural anti-aging products in this list, you can drink milk and honey. Doing this will not only improve your skin. It will also bring forth positive effects to your overall health. You can also apply this mixture on your face at night and leave it there until the sun is up. This will give you a soft, radiant and fresh looking skin in the morning. 

6. Rosehip Oil

Retinol is a popular substance in anti-aging creams. Basically, this specific form of vitamin A is mostly found in animals. Hence, retinol is chiefly used in commercial beauty products. But, did you know that there’s a natural item that can offer the same effects? Yes, rosehip is now gaining popularity in the beauty and cosmetic department for its milder retinol-like effects.

If you’re familiar with tretinoin, it is a retinoid and the active ingredient in most anti-aging creams. This specific compound is also found in rosehip. Although, rosehip’s tretinoin contents are lower compared to other pharmaceutical products, studies have shown that it is still a helpful anti-aging remedy.

With the right dose, rosehip oil can do wonders for your skin. It has shown promising results in preventing and reducing early stages of wrinkles, photodamage and premature aging. It also encourages skin rejuvenation. Lastly, it also has other components like lycopene, essential fatty acids and vitamin C and E. All these substances aid in nurturing our skin.  

One downside of using rosehip seed oil is price. A pure concentration of this oil is quite expensive compared to the other products in this list. Furthermore, it is a highly volatile substance. Hence, it can only last for a short period before its components break down and become ineffective. Finally, allergic reactions can happen. Testing the oil on a small area of your skin is a must before applying it to your face. 

7. Turmeric

Traditionally known for its various uses, turmeric is a common cooking ingredient. In fact, this legendary spice has conquered not only the culinary world, but the health and beauty department as well. What makes this golden-yellow spice special?

Curcumin is the constituent fount in turmeric that provides its long list of health benefits. This compound is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. It is also known to aid in collagen production. When combined with other ingredients like milk or yogurt, it is an excellent exfoliating agent.  Thus, it also brighten dull skin. Lastly, a mixture of lemon and turmeric powder has shown promising results in lightening age spots and blemishes.

 When using turmeric as a natural anti-aging remedy, you can either drink a tea made from this spice or apply it topically. You can mix it with lemon, yogurt, milk or honey to enhance its skin benefits. Keep in mind that this spice will leave a stain. But, don’t worry. It’s temporary. Typically, a toner can lighten or remove the yellow stain.  


Natural Anti-aging Remedies

Commercialized products and treatments that promote “wrinkle-free skin” are all over the market. But, these items are typically expensive and their effectiveness is not guaranteed.

As you can see, there are several natural products that can make your skin look younger and radiant. However, consistency is a must. Creating your own skin care routine is the foundation of a healthy and younger looking skin.

With that, there are other anti-aging remedies you can use aside from those mentioned above like Aloe Vera and cucumber. Apple cider vinegar is another economical product you can use. Most of these items are typically found in our household and are very economical. But, as always, before trying any natural materials that are not mentioned above, you need to do some research about their specific effects and effectiveness. Aside from that, always test these products first on a small area of your skin. If you experience any signs of irritation or hypersensitivity reaction, you should immediately stop using the remedy.
