Apartment Movers Guide

By | Aug 4, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Looking for an apartment mover? If you've never hired a moving company before, there are a few things you need to know about the industry. A trusted mover can be hard to come by, but just doing a little research ahead of time could save you some time, money, and headaches.

  1. Analyze your location. Long driveways, restricted parking lots, and the number of stairs will be key factors in your move. Streets and parking lots that do not allow large trucks will need to find work arounds that could increase the amount of time required to complete the job. The number of flights of stairs will also be factors into the time and cost of a job.
  2. Evaluate your stuff. Take a good look at everything you want to move. Do you own a piano or a shrunk that will be difficult to move? If so, be sure to point this out to them when they provide an in person estimate.
  3. Decide how much work you want to do. If you are looking to minimize your moving costs, buy your own storage boxes, and handle all of the packing yourself. Move all boxes on your own, and just hire movers to move the bulkier furniture. If you want to minimize your time spent, include all costs in your estimate. From the packing material to the actual boxing up of everything, moving it, and unpacking at your new location.
  4. Call at least 5 moving companies, and request in-person estimates from the 3 you like the best. Some movers will not want to do an inperson estimate, but it will give you a more realistic estimate of cost involved. Movers can quote low online or over the phone and show up to tell you that this is more than what you said. All of a sudden your cost starts to skyrocket.
  5. Decide on the apartment movers. Ask questions like is this estimate binding? Will you provide proof of weight of the truck before and after my goods are loaded? Will they be willing and able to store your goods for a short time period? What kind of time window do they give for delivery? Are they a moving broker? If so, what is the name of the specific company who will be handling the move? What kind of protection do they offer for damage?
  6. Document your property before packing things up.
  7. Give your contact information to the driver, and get his.
