Apple cider vinegar is an ingredient in many salad dressings, marinades, and other recipes. It is also useful for removing stains in a coffee pot, keeping ants off a countertop, and even unclogging a stopped up drain. Apple cider vinegar has many medicinal uses as well, including the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, or BV.
Bacterial Vaginosis is a condition that occurs when the balance between the amount of good bacteria and bad bacteria in the vagina is off balance. Instead of many of the good bacteria and few bad bacteria, the imbalance results in an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the vagina. Except for in the case of pregnant women (read Pregnancy and BV), where premature birth or infections of the amniotic fluid can occur, bacterial vaginosis is typically not harmful if treated right away. However, many women do experience unpleasant symptoms with bacterial vaginosis, such as a foul smelling vaginal odor and an abnormally large amount of whitish-gray discharge. The odor and discharge are sometimes accompanied by a burning sensation during urination or itching in the vaginal area.
Antibiotics can be prescribed by a doctor to treat bacterial vaginosis. However, as with any use of antibiotics, taking antibiotics to treat bacterial vaginosis may disrupt the level of beneficial bacteria in the body, causing further problems. In addition, antibiotics tend to have only a short term effect in treating the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis. A natural remedy for BV, such as the use of apple cider vinegar, is highly recommended because it is safer for the body, and it is much more helpful in providing lasting relief from the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis.
Treating bacterial vaginosis with apple cider vinegar is a simple and low-cost remedy, and there are three ways to do it. Choose the method that is most comfortable for you. The first method is to add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to 8 ounces of water, and drink the mixture. You should drink two glasses of the apple cider vinegar and water mixture daily to reduce the alkaline levels in the body, which will help to kill bad bacteria. For the second method, prepare a vaginal douche by combining one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with two cups of warm water. Use the prepared douche once a day to directly reduce the level of alkaline in the vagina and kill the vaginosis-causing bacteria. For the third method, mix a cup of apple cider vinegar into your warm bath water and soak for at least 30 minutes per day. This method works in the same way as the vinegar douche to lower the alkaline level in the vagina and inhibit the growth of bad bacteria.

To prevent occurrences of bacterial vaginosis, be sure to wash your vagina daily with warm water and mild soap, and wear cotton or cotton-lined panties. Avoid wearing pants that are too tight in the crotch as well. You should also avoid frequent douching because the chemicals in the douche can cause the bacteria levels in the vagina to become unbalanced, potentially causing problems like BV . If you have symptoms of bacterial vaginosis, begin treatment with apple cider vinegar right away.
