Applying For Scholarships
If you are student or your child is in high school, it is the best time to start searching for college scholarships. You do not want to wait until senior year to start applying for financial aid. Here are the reasons why this is the case. There are some scholarships that require you to send in a letter and then the organization will send you the application.
Many students have this wild idea that you simply have to go online and all the information for scholarships will be available at their fingertips. Well that is not exactly true. The reason is because some of the best opportunities are local. That's right you can get some easy money from organizations within your own county. You obviously want to ask your high school counselor about applications but don't solely rely on them to pass along information. Sometimes they only give that information to students who are in the top ten percent of the class.
Search online for school grants while you are a student can do wonders for you. Filling out forms and writing essays take a lot of practice but once you get the hang of it or have a good one written you can just tweak it the next time.
You will need plenty of transcripts. I'm sure you know what this is right and where to get them. If not, simply go to your high school administration office and ask them for an original copy of your transcript. By original I mean that their signature and stamp needs to be across the envelope and that it is sealed. If the seal has been broken you will need to get another copy. If you are a college student more than likely you are going to have to pay for a copy. But the money is worth it since the return may be a good amount for you to use toward tuition.
Yes you will have to use the money for tuition only. There are some scholarships that will come to you in your name but most will be sent to the school that you specify in your application and the monies will be applied to your student account. At the end of the semester, after tuition has been paid for if your balance shows a credit, the school is supposed to send you a check in your name. You can then use that money for whatever you would like. It's not out of the question to receive a grant for school. That is why filling out scholarships while you are in school makes all the difference and it sure beats having to work your way through college.
