Are Flannel Sheets Better than Poly-Cotton Sheets?

For those with a limited budget, determining whether poly-cotton or flannel sheets are the best option in terms of beauty, comfort and durability can help you stretch your budget even more. Though sheets are often relatively inexpensive per set, the cost of outfitting an entire house can represent a significant expense for many households. By identifying what you are looking for in a sheet, you can decide which option will fit best with your needs. This will ensure that you buy fewer sheet sets and each one in which you invest lasts longer.

At first glance, poly-cotton sheets would seem to be the most economical choice. At most department stores, these sheets with both natural and synthetic fibers are priced well below other fabric options, including flannel and satin. Though the initial cost is important, it should be weighed against how long the sheet will last. Poly-cotton is generally resistant to pilling, one of the ills that plagues other types of sheeting. This means that they will look fresher for longer. However, they are likely to become stiff and scratch after being washed multiple times, something that does not happen with flannel. With subsequent washings, flannel will continue to grow more and more comfortable, whereas poly-cotton will begin to grow less so.

There are other factors that affect the manner in which sheets wear over time, beyond just looking at their comfort. Pilling was mentioned above as something that can prematurely age sheets. While poly-cotton generally comes out as the winner in that comparison, there are other durability factors for which flannel is the clear winner. Flannel bed sheets are significantly thicker than synthetic ones. This difference can even be seen through the packaging in many cases. This thickness will help prevent holes from forming in the sheet when it is being used. Many find that their flannel sheets are good enough to be used in guest rooms, even years after they were purchased.

The last thing to consider is the utility of the sheet. Flannel is known for its ability to insulate the sleeper, keeping them cool in the summer and warm in the winter, while poly-cotton simply covers the mattress. They can make any bed feel far more comfortable, even if the mattress is old and the blankets low quality. Adding these sheets will instantly make your bed feel more luxurious and inviting.

Flannel sheets are generally considered the better investment to those who are looking for high quality sheets that will last.
