Some people believe that locking the doors and windows to their home is adequate protection from intruders; that is not the case. However, improper installation can lead to the device not working if there is an intruder or the alarm being set off all the time even when there isn't an intruder. Detectors should be placed in an area where intruders will have to walk through, such as the stairs of hallway. They shouldn't be put in an area where they are in direct contact with heat or where the sun will be able to shine on them for prolonged periods of the day.
