Are Remanufactured Toner Cartridges Good?

By Edited Apr 5, 2014 0 0

Most people with a printer want to know are remanufactured toner cartridges good. Let's face it, toner cartridges alone can be very expensive.  Many times the price of ink jet replacement can out price the printer over the course of it's natural usable life. This can be very frustrating and expensive.

So anyone with a printer, particularly laser printers, is likely going to want to find cheap toner cartridges, in fact, they can often be 50-70% cheaper than brand new alternatives. But many people have no idea what is involved in the ink refurb process.

It's not as simple as it appears on the surface.

 What is Remanufactured Toner?

printer cartridges remanufactured are essentially refurbished ink ideally emptied completely out and added back in it's container, to the OEM manufacturer's specs.

Truly remanufactured ink cartridges are cleaned out through an ultrasonic process. This process is so thorough that every last remnant of ink in this process is emptied. The cartridge is then tested to make sure that it passes reliability and quality standards. Once the process passes inspection, a technician begins the refill and seal process. This process is also careful and exact.

The remanufactured toner must then go through even more stringent testing after it has been filled. It now must produce a perfect image. Assuming that this refurbished ink jet cartridge passes mustard, it then is marketed. If a customer returns the product, it is discarded and never reused or refilled again.

Most people have no idea the quality standards that go behind GOOD remanufactured ink, it's a painstaking and exact process.

But there is another side to this kind of discount ink. Anyone can essentially get in the recylced ink cartridge game. And there are some sloppy vendors, who essentially pay money for people's old printer cartridges and simply refill them.

You should be concerned by this not just for ethical reasons, but also because of print quality. Quality in printer with poorly recycled ink jet cartridges are lacking and you risk having your print jobs look unprofessional.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Remanufactured Toner Cartridges?

PROS

  • Refurbished toner can be very cheap. As stated earlier, up to 70% of the cost of a new ink jet cartridge.

  • When made well, remanufactured toner can be reliable and perform just as well as its brand new counterpart.

  • Refurbished toner cartridges are eco-friendly and green. There is no limit on the amount of times a reliable toner cartridge can be refurbished as long as it passes the stringent checks.

 CONS:

  • Refurbished toner can have a higher failure rate once marketed. But only about 2% higher

  • Used toner can be simply refilled by fly by night ink companies. As stated above, truly refurbished toner should be ultrasonically cleaned and completely emptied not simply refilled. Refilled toner cartridges for obvious reasons don't have the same image quality.

When looking for used ink, always ask how the company goes about the remanufacturing process. Remember to also ask what the reliability to used ink is. If the company doesn't know or seems to hem and haw about the answers look elsewhere.

So when asking if remanufactured toner cartridges are any good, now you know that they definitely can be.
