Area Rug Cleaning

By | Jul 22, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

How do you clean your area rug? Before I get into area rug cleaning methods you should know that anything that cleans a carpet or rug also cleans an area rug, which is just a small form of a carpet or rug. So, how do you clean it? There are generally 4 levels. If one level doesn't work, simply move onto the next one.

Things You Will Need

Either a spot treatment or some kind of hot water extraction machine.

Step 1

Vacuum your area rug. This will make sure that no large pieces get in the way once you try getting rid of those stains.

Step 2

Try a spot treatment. Spot treatments include, but are not limited to, products such as Oxyclean and Folex. Use a cotton towel to dry the stain(s), which you poured with the solution.

Step 3

Consider getting a steam machine. You can buy these at retail stores or online. They look like vacuum cleaners and are, despite their advertising, 'hot water extraction' machines because there is no steam involved. The water these machines use is as hot as your tap. Despite the fact that it's not a 'steam' machine, these products are still incredibly effective. Simply check out the user reviews online and you'll see what I mean.

Step 4

If you want a more powerful hot water extraction machine, rent one from your local home improvement store, UHaul, or grocery store. They look like mini refrigerators and, like their retail counterparts, advertise themselves as 'steam machines', when they are simply not. They cost about $20 an hour and you can rent them in roughly 4 hour chunks.

Step 5

Consider the services of a professional. They'll likely either use the same rented unit mentioned above or a steam unit. You'd want to hire a 'pro' if your house is big or if you just do not have the time to clean your area rug by yourself.

You can hire someone to do area rug cleaning for you. But because it is small in the first place it's better just to do it yourself.
