Armband Tattoos - The things to consider before getting inked up

Armband tattoos

Armband tattoos are one of the most common types and since they look so good it is easy to see why. An armband tattoo can stretch around the circumference of the whole arm, or it can simply be around a small section of the arm. The choice in armband tattoo is entirely up to you, which is the beauty of them as you decide how far around your arm you want it to go. The inner part of your arm is generally more sensitive and having this area tattooed can be quite painful, but you don’t have to go all the way around if you don’t want to.

Before you go and get inked up one of the first questions has to be “On what part of my arm do I get my armband tattoo?”

Before running off your nearest studio for your armband tattoo you need to remember that the armband tattoo, like all other ink tattoos are permanent so you need to take a step back and have a good think about where on your arm to have it done. Typically, the armband tattoo will go around the top of the arm but what’s to stop you having it around your wrist (this is becoming increasingly popular), halfway down your forearm or halfway down your upper arm?

An armband tattoo around the top of the arm or around the wrist looks good, but if it is halfway down the arm it may look a little strange, although different people have different likes and tastes so what is strange to one person may not necessarily be strange to another.

If you have other tattoos on your arm and are looking to make a sleeve, half sleeve or quarter sleeve tattoo and armband halfway down your arm will not look strange at all in fact it will look pretty cool, so the location will depend on your specific circumstances.

If you are unsure if your armband tattoo will look strange on a particular part of your arm why not draw it on yourself? You don’t need to go in to detail and a simple sketch will do. So grab a felt tipped pen, sketch a quick design and take a look in a mirror. How does it look? Are you happy with it? As long as you are happy with the location that is all that matters, after all you are the one who has to put up with it for the rest of your life.

Once you have decided on the location you  need to decide what design to have. Arguably, this is the most difficult decision to make. There are literally thousands of different designs available so choosing one is not an easy task.  With the many different type of designs to choose from some instantly spring to mind, and these include;

1) A simple single strand of barbed wire (which was made famous by Pamela Anderson)

2) A Polynesian style armband tattoo made up of faces and animals

3)  A Celtic knot patterned armband tattoo

Here's a simple barbed wire armband tatoo design that is a bit of an acquired taste. the location of this armband tattoo, being just above the upper arm/forearm join, may not be to everyone's taste but each to their own.

The above are just three suggestions and there are thousands of different armband tattoo designs you can have. Before deciding on an armband tattoo design I would recommend you take your time, look around and go and speak to some tattoo artists before making the final choice of armband tattoo. You may even choose to design your own armband tattoo design and take it to your local tattoo studio and get it inked on your arm. If you want something personal and truly unique designing your own armband tattoo is the only real option.

An intricate Celtic knot patterned armband tattoo. When getting an armband tattoo of this nature you need to ensure the tattoo artist is experienced in these tattoos otherwise you may well regret it in the future. Celtic knots require a lot of skill to stop the black ink from leaking in to the areas that should remain uncoloured.

Once you have decided on the armband tattoo design and whereabouts on your arm you want the armband tattoo it is time to select an appropriate tattoo artist to ink you up. Choosing the right tattoo artist is almost as important as choosing the armband tattoo and where to have the tattoo inked. Before choosing the tattoo artist you need to some research and choose one who is reputable and works in a clean environment. Never rush in and choose the first tattoo artist you come across as you will end up regretting it if your chosen tattoo artist turns out not to be so good.

In conclusion;

So, when getting an armband tattoo the important things you need to consider are;

1) The armband tattoo design

2) Whereabouts on your arm you want the armband tattoo

3) Who you are going to get to ink your armband tattoo

Like all tattoos an armband tattoo is for life so it is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

I admire tatoos on people and find the phenomena enticing. Alas i don't have one, and won't get one (for medical reasons), but they sure are interesting. Now I can look for wristband tats - I thought I'd get an ankleband tat if I could. Nice update!
