Starting an exciting new career is a challenging task for every student. To get the most out of an education, one must choose carefully - and what better way to challenge oneself creatively, than by getting an education studying Digital Arts & Design at a respectable college?

Careers in Digital Arts and Design

Every career involves some degree of creativity, but none will test an artist's abilities quite as much as the Digital Arts and Design programs, the internships and finally the design firm job, or wherever the skills will be utilized.

Design firms require the talent, education and experience of good graphic designers and artists to develop concepts visually. Some students will be trained to direct an entire team of artists, providing the direction for a particular product- whether that is a magazine, website or a full visual advertising campaign. There will be pressure, but the overall reward will be the outcome: more experience working full-time with an artistic and intelligent group.

If working for one company doesn't lead to advancement as one would hope, switching to freelance work is also a possibility. As a freelance designer, the opportunities are limitless. The only thing to stop one from developing an extensive portfolio for the industry is one's appetite for more challenging projects, and a larger pool of clients.

How to Begin a Career in Digital Arts and Design

To begin a career in this field, a student must first decide on the ultimate goal: a great design job at a firm, a company of their own, or some other creative, business venture. Once that is clearly set in mind, meeting with counselors about financial aid or other finance related matters will help solidify the 'how' for the next three to four years of education.

Many online colleges make degrees and certification as easy as filling out a form, and waiting for emailed assignments from instructors. Additional online training systems are used to complete coursework, and some instructors even use web chat rooms to lecture art students.

Since the medium of Digital Arts & Design requires a computer and illustration or photo software, it's a good bet that every student will end up using some form of training via the internet-lecture system.

Typically, the Digital Arts and Design programs can last anywhere from three years to four years, depending on the course work, the degree, certificate or diploma that the student is striving toward. Carefully planning the credits for each term and semester with a knowledgeable counselor will aid in making the process easy and stress-free.

What Does A Diploma Mean?

Even in financially troubled times, a designer is a must-have for businesses who wish for a fresh logo design, marketing materials re-done, or video editing for their new commercial. So even if the graduate Digital Arts student doesn't find a job right away, there will always be opportunities down the road. Plus, statistics still show that individuals with degrees or certification always earn far more than those with just a high school diploma. Either way, it's a win-win situation for Digital Arts and Design students.

Other Considerations for Digital Arts & Design Programs

Various other fields will prepare a student for an internship or a job, right out of college...few will actually help the student prepare two or more portfolios for the job search ahead of them. It's key that counselors can answer the basic questions about this program. Students need to be aware of the core credit courses, and how they wish to be educated. At times, there is some room to develop skills in an unrelated field as one moves closer to graduation date.

What's Common in All Art Programs

Every college will have course work that is standard, and all art courses will include some cursory retracing of materials covered in other classes. Art history, art in different cultures, and many more will be covered. Software such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, 3D design programs like Autodesk's 3DS Max will be utilized to prepare the modern art student to compete in the global industry.

Average Cost of Programs

Art degrees can be expensive in private colleges, but non-private institutions may only charge $6,900 a semester for a MFA. Every university will have different class fees, not to mention the textbook and materials costs. Budgeting may be a crucial part of everyday life for some, so be prepared to do a little basic math to make college a pleasant experience - even if design is one's specialty.

Interaction with Other Students

The greatest benefits of being in an education environment for the span of several years, is making friends with similarly minded individuals. Their talents and artistic backgrounds will give a full education to enthusiastic learners; speaking one-on-one about specific projects and current design-related issues will lead to ever more creativity. After class projects may be one of the reasons why some students choose to get up early, complete class assignments sooner...and study harder than anyone else.

After graduation, many of these artistic friends will join you in paid projects. With more and more collaboration, the quality of work will garner much praise from one's peers and the satisfaction of knowing which part you have contributed to the successful completion of a design project.

The most beautiful posters and artwork come from college educated students. If this career interests an individual, nothing should stop them from taking all the necessary steps to learning about the opportunities available to them thorough the digital art and design programs at various colleges- including online learning and certification colleges, which make it possible for art students to interact with instructors who would otherwise be unable to tutor them in person. After determining the financial aspects of this program, the degree or certification programs will give the artist a chance to experiment with the digital arts mediums, learn about the thousands of years old art history, and develop their portfolio for their future employers.
