When visiting The Netherlands, a visit to the beautiful historic city of Amsterdam is absolutely a must! Not only because of the picturesque canals, quirky shops, typical Amsterdam cafes, the capital of the Netherlands has a lot more to offer!
Art lovers should not leave Amsterdam without a visit to The Van Gogh Museum, one of the leading art museums in the Netherlands.
Van Gogh Museum
The Van Gogh Museum contains the largest collection of paintings by the world famous Vincent van Gogh in the world. Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch post Impressionist painter and his work had a far-reaching influence on 20th century art.
Transport, Opening Times and Admission Fee
You can find the Van Gogh Museum at the Museumplein (Museumsquare), where you can also find the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum. The location can easily be reached by public transport. From the Amsterdam Central Station, you should take tram line 2 to Nieuw Sloten or tram line 5 to Amstelveen Binnenhof. You should get out at the tram stop Van Baerlestraat. The Museumplein can also be reached by car and there is a parking garage underneath Museumplein.
Van Gogh Museum is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. On Fridays the museum stays open until 22:00. The ticket office is open until 30 minutes before the Van Gogh Museum closes its doors. The Friday night is a special night in the museum, the central hall transforms and you will see a bar, lounge chairs, video projections, DJ's, live music and much more.
The admission fee for adults is 14 euros. Children younger than 17 years can enter the museum for free.
Van Gogh Museum is easily accessible for disabled people. The lift stops at every floor of the museum and there are wheelchairs available, free of charge. In front of the museum there is also a parking space for disabled people, which is marked with a blue wheelchair parking sign. To park there, you need to have a blue European parking permit.
To avoid making long queues, you can already purchase your tickets online via the website of the Van Gogh Museum, which gives you access to the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Especially during the holiday periods, the queues at the Van Gogh Museum can become quite big. Please be aware that the online tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded.
Besides the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam has a lot of other interesting museums that you can visit during your trip to the Dutch capital. For instance, the Rijksmuseum is a must-see for anyone interested in art and lovers of alcoholic beverages should definitely pay a visit to the Heineken Experience and House of Bols.
