Asian Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical nose enhancement performed by plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists or a maxillofacial surgeons. This procedure is also known as a nose job or nose reshaping. The purpose of the surgery is for an aesthetic and functional improvement of a person's nose. There are many reasons why patients choose to undergo this type surgery, but whatever they might be, the objective in every operation performed is to narrow, shorten or lower the original size of the nose.

For Asian patients getting asian rhinoplasty, it is important that every procedure is planned to create a natural and balanced appearance as well as establishing harmony to the rest of the Asian facial features. Unlike the Caucasian nose job which the goal in every surgery involves making the nose smaller, Asian rhinoplasty is the opposite. One of its goals is to make the nose larger so that it is compatible to the Asian face. Creating a Caucasian nose is not one of the reasons for an Asian nose job. This is because of the racial anatomy of Asians.

The common material used for the bridge in performing an Asian nose job is silicone, Gore-Tex or Porex. It is the silicone plastic bridge that is mostly used for Asian nose surgery. The safety of these materials have been proven for long-term usage with minimal tissue rejection. Gore-Tex however is mostly used for Caucasian nose jobs, thus it has limited sizes and shapes that are suitable for Asians. There are Asians that have facial features that conform to Gore-Tex moldings but it is not appropriate to a large number of them. The wide broad sheets of the material do not fit perfectly and appropriately to the nasal shapes of Asians.

There are also some surgeons who practice using tissues from the patient's skull, rib, or ear in building a nose bridge, but this is not applicable to most Asians as they do not have enough septal or ear tissue to spare for this use. Besides, this method requires a series of procedures for an Asian to undergo and most of them are not willing or cannot bear to undergo a series of operations. Asians have nose tips that do not have projections or definition like those of other ethnic groups. But proper blending with the face of the patient can alter how the nose's tip projects and is defined. For the tip of the nose, what are commonly used to reduce the possibility of implant rejection are natural tissues. The septum from the inside part of the nose can be used for better tip definition and if there is a need for more tissues, tissues from the ears can be utilized. The patient does not have to worry about the appearance of the ear where the tissue was grafted as it returns back to its original shape in just a matter of days.

It is important to look for a surgeon that knows how to differentiate and perform Asian rhinoplasty as opposed to other ethnicities. You want to avoid the mistake of an surgeon performing a Caucasian rhinoplasty to an Asian patient. Some of them are not familiar with the Asian nose features or asian rhinoplasty and often times the result would be an unattractive appearance. Performing a Caucasian nose job to Asians often results in having an oversized bridge because of lack of understanding of the aesthetics of Asian noses. Also, inappropriate projection of the nose (Asians do not have a strong cartilage on the tip) in the likeness of a Caucasian or the overmanipulation of the cartilage could result in a bridge collapse.

Additionally, narrowing of the nostrils is not appropriate for all Asians and asian rhinoplasty. Using synthetic materials that are not compatible with the procedure can cause problems as well. In most Caucasian operations, it is the natural tissue that is being used which is difficult to shape sometimes despite the fact that it can appear to be large enough for Asian noses. This can result in mistakenly breaking the nasal bones which is mostly done to Caucasians all in an effort to have the nose appear smaller which is not necessary for Asians. With Asian plastic surgery and asian rhinoplasty in particular, you have a whole new discipline of aesthetic surgery and beauty. It is better to find a surgeon that is skilled in ethnic rhinoplasty so that your needs can be met.

You want to get an optimum result when you undergo asian rhinoplasty surgery such as this, so it is best to go with the most skilled surgeon. During your consultation, you can assess if the doctor understands your needs. They can provide before and after photos that can show you their Asian nose work. Additionally, they should be able to provide you with before and after computer imagery of how you will look before the surgery. This is an important step that should not be skipped so that you will know beforehand exactly what to expect and what you are going to be paying for. Just because a plastic surgeon is famous does not mean you should use them. They should be an expert in the procedure you want to get.
