Attractions in Bruges

Bruges is a city that is located near the coast of Belgium. It has been called "the Venice of the North" and was one of the largest cities in the world in the eleventh century.

The History of Bruges

Vikings founded the city of Bruges in the ninth century. In the fourteenth century, this city became the chief commercial area of the world due to the fact it had a large port. Also in the fourteenth century, this area became on of the world's important financial and trading centers. Today Bruges is a popular tourist destination that is loved for its history as well as its attractions. Those that have a Bruges travel plan will find that they will enjoy good bars, restaurants, international cuisine and Belgian beers. Tourists can explore the medieval city on foot or by boat.

Tourist Attractions in Bruges

Those that travel to Bruges will find that there are a number of famous and popular attractions that they can visit. Some of these are listed below.

  • The Holy Blood Museum houses a piece of blood stained clothing. According to the legend, this clothing comes from the body of Jesus.
  • A popular museum that attracts many visitors throughout the year is The Choco Story. This museum has many interesting exhibitions that celebrate the history of chocolate and how it is made.
  • The Saint Salvators Catheral.
  • The city hall on the Burg Square.
  • Our Lady's church is very popular due to its medieval character and structure. It also houses several important works of art.
  • The world famous artist Michelangelo only created one sculpture in his life. This is the marble sculpture entitled "Madonna" that resides in Bruges.
  • The hospital museum is an excellent attraction for those interested in medicine. This museum is one of the oldest hospitals in the world.
  • The city can be explored by canal boat trips which is a fantastic way to explore everything Bruges has to offer.
  • The Diamond House is a store that was established in 1518. This store offers a large selection of diamonds.

Visitors to this wonderful city will be able to enjoy good shopping districts, parks, bike rides, excellent chocolate and good Belgian beer.

How to Get to Bruges

Those that are planning trips to Bruges may want to invest in a good Bruges travel guide.  You can get to Bruges either by plane or train during your travels.  If you're traveling from somewhere international, you'll need to stop at a major city and then organize a flight.
