Autumn Lawn Care

By | Apr 7, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 1

Your lawn takes quite a pounding over the summer and this is especially true if you've got pets or young children, the autumn and winter is the time your lawn has to repair itself to face another spring and summer. You need to look after your lawn to get the best from it in the autumn is an ideal time to do a bit of maintenance and preventative work.

Autumn is the ideal time to aerate your lawn, aeration is done by poking holes in about 5 inches deep into your lawn. It is best, if possible, to use a dedicated aerator which actually removes cores of soil, this is far superior to using a fork and wiggling it back and forwards. Using a garden fork merely compacts the soil further so it does not help at all. Once you've been over your lawn with the aerator you can brush in some coarse sharp sand to fill the holes so that they do not fill backup with soil.

Autumn is also a great time for scarifying - what this actually means is to giving it a really good raking to remove the moss and thatched that has built up. If you don't remove this moss then no new grass can grow and you will end up with a patchy lawn. Don't worry if your lawn looks an absolute state after you've done this it will quickly bounced back and look better than ever.

These are the main two tasks that need doing in autumn however, something that will need doing ongoing throughout the autumn and winter is removing leaves, failing to remove the leaves will make your lawn go patchy and brown because the leaves will stop air getting to it. If you have small lawn then it is easy just to use a rake, but if you've got a large lawn with a number of deciduous trees in a leaf sweeper that is either push along or powered will greatly assist you. Powered lawn sweepers often have shredders built in to them so you can add the leaves straight to your leaf mould pile so you can create something from those leaves that can give something back to the ground.

These simple care tips will help to maintain your lawn's appearance throughout the year, it has to be said though that none of them are for the fainthearted and they can be quite challenging. Although after doing any of them your lawn will look worse this is only temporary and come the summer you will be glad that you put in the hard work.
