I'd like to start off by saying that I'm no expert when it comes to babies and young kids. I don't much about changing nappies heating milk to the right temperature or the latest fashions in the world of children but after so many years of having to buy presents for friends newly born babies I've learnt a thing or two about buying baby gifts that don't require any knowledge at all.

Tell me the sex of a child and I'll get myself onto the Internet and I'll have a present bought in under 20 minutes and it will be something that both mother and child will think is the best gift ever. So what could i possibly be taking about? Well a baby blanket of course, something that every little person should have in their possession and which will be become like a best friend to them over the next few years.

Buy a kid their favorite baby blanket and you'll be considered a friend for life, just try it and see. Not only that but a baby security blanket is a great thing to help little ones get to sleep so you will be thanked by the mother as well.

So how do we go about picking the best baby blanket for a child? Me strategy for most things in life is that simple is usually best and I don't deviate from that concept when shopping for baby blankets. Once you start looking at retailers online you may become bewildered by the choice available but if you keep the following points in mind you will emerge unscathed with the ideal gift in hand.

1. This one is especially important if you don't know the parents too well, pick a nice neutral color with a very simple or no pattern, knitted baby blankets go down particularly well. If you know someone well you might be able to pick out a blanket with a funky pattern they love but I prefer not to risk it.

2. Personalized baby blankets are appreciated by most people but make sure it is carried out professionally and tastefully or you are better off without it.

3. Organic baby blankets - In this day and age when we are so aware of the health impact of everything we give to our children it makes sense to buy a security blanket that is made from a material that hasn't been treated with man made chemicals.

4. The softer the better - Babies appreciate the feeling of gentle material on their skin so a super soft baby blanket will do down a storm.

5. Handmade baby blankets - If you really want to get a gift that stands out from the crowd and shows that you care then a handmade blanket is really the way to go, and I don't mean that you have to make it yourself. You can even buy exceptional handmade items on the Internet these days, do a simple search on Google and you will find many people who have set up their own business at home to produce this very thing.
