Baby Changing Tables
A changing table is a must when there is a baby in the house. A changing table is a raised platform where you put a baby to change its diaper so that you do not have to bend over, or use the floor.
In reality, you can diaper a baby mostly anywhere. All you need is room enough to work, and a place to keep the baby from falling. A floor fits this description perfectly. However, you will be changing an awful lot of diapers until you baby is potty trained. You and your back will benefit from using a standard changing table or a dresser that doubles as one.
Most nursery sets always have a changing table. A changing table will allow you to diaper your baby at a comfortable level. Typically, changing tables stand 36 to 43 inches tall. They have drawers or some other set up to keep diapers and wipes within easy reach.
Unlike the crib or the floor, changing tables have storage areas. They may have shelves, baskets, and drawers for you use. You can store essentials such as diapers, wipes, rash ointments, and maybe a toy or two to help keep your baby busy.
An advantage of buying a changing table instead of simply using a dresser, is that a vinyl changing pad is usually included. However, if you would like a cover for the pad, you will have to buy it separately. The advantage to this is that there is a selection of colors and patterns available.
If you do choose to convert a dresser into a changing table, you may be able to find a removable changing pad that simply attaches to the top of a regular dresser. It is always the least expensive route to re-purpose an existing piece of furniture. When adding a changing pad to a regular dresser, look for a pad with at least two opposing contoured sides and a baby restraint. There are a surprising number of stories about babies rolling off a changing table.
The biggest advantage of using a dresser with a changing pad for a changing table, is that you are actually using a dresser. So, once your little darling is potty trained and the changing table is no longer required, you simply remove the pad and you have a dresser you can use, as opposed to a changing table you need to remove.
So, take care when you are using a changing table. Make sure you have everything you need, or at least within reach, when you diaper your child. Never leave your baby alone on the table. They will roll off when you are not looking.
